I agree with Swamp I think it could affect the spine of the shaft which would cause at least some of your windage issue. Arthur has a good point also about the bristles.

With a drop away and moderate helical I see very little flight difference out to 40 yards.

1 Spine as mentioned

2 Contact effects vanes a feathers differently even slight contact with vanes will redirect arrow flight , and it could be consistent also , meaning that you might shoot good groups but in a different spot at distance
