i have a question about shooting a wrist strap trigger fired release.

we all know to shoot well, you should try to shoot with back tension, not pulling the trigger like a rifle trigger.

ive seen a TON of variation of shooting that style of release. index finger, middle finger, think i watched a guy shoot with his ring finger even...he put fingers on each side of the release like he was holding a handle release and fired it like that....ive seen guys shoot with their hands closed around the release and seen guys shoot with fingers extended out....

just wondering what or if theres a "proper" best way to shoot a wrist strap trigger release...i know i need a BT release to learn what back tension feels like...but know im probably always going to hunt with my trigger release..i want to learn to shoot it properly and the way that will be most accurate...see so many variations, i just dont know whats right....

Actually you don't need a back tension release. It is a good training aid but you certainly don't have to have it to learn how to shoot using back tension. Draw and aim with your trigger using back tension (pulling your shoulder blades together as if you're trying to pinch a pencil between them and hold it in line with your spine. If you want to feel how the shot process should feel, have a friend stand along side and apply slightly increasing pressure to your trigger while you aim and tension. When the shot goes off, that's how it should feel. For doing it with a wrist strap trigger style release you need to have the release fitting you properly. The release head should be short enough that you can wrap the first knuckle of your trigger finger completely around the trigger. I found I got a more stable and consistant anchor by using my middle finger on the trigger but that's going to vary from one person to the next. If you want one release that you can hunt with (assuming that you plan on forcing the shot while hunting) and shoot purely by back tension for targets you should look at a thumb trigger release.

Good description, Rob. I use the back tension method in conjunction with my Short 'N Sweet release for precision shots when time allows. Sort of like having a set trigger on a hunting rifle.

Default RE: release

so theres really no right or wrong way in terms of what finger you use to trigger it??

i got the idea of using BT to fire it, and its short enough...just been doing it so long i honestly cant tell if im subconsencly triggering it like a rifle, or if i am using BT...i try to use BT, just dont know if i am...sooner or later im going to get a BT to help me learn and for target shooting....

just see so many shooters using different fingers on the trigger, some closed grip, some extend their fingers out...ive tried it all and dont know what works best for me lol....the middle finger is right inline with the trigger and seems more natural IMO...guess i will have to play with it..maybe go back to shooting with my eyes closed and trying to feel the BT and feel the good release....

When the shots are surprising you, you've got it.
