I was a 1 pin sight user for a while. But I switched back to a 3 pin setup for hunting about 2 years ago. And I use a 5 pin for 3D or target shoots.

I use 6 pins, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, & 60 yds. I have 3 colours red, yellow, & green. I have memorised the colour yardage combinations for example my top green pin is 30, red is 10 etc. That way when I range a deerand it is say 40 yds I just put that appropriate colour pin on the "spot". If the target is say 35 yds then just "split" the pins.

Also having a high number of pins and practicing at the longer distances magnifies your form or exaggerates sight adjustment error. That way a shot presented at a shorter range appears easy.
