Why do they call it Left/Right Wing and is there such a thing as 'too much' helical in a fletch?

I can theorize as to why it's called left vs right wing but I'd like one of you geniuses to lay it out for me...

(still a student of the game!)

Aw heck I thought you were asking about politics...LOL...

Left wing and right wing are actually which side of the turkey the feathers came off of. They have a natural curl to them and when they grind them down the make fletching they generally leave more bone on one side or the other depending on if it's a LW feather or a RW feather... I sure hope that made sense...

Yeah it makes sense but I'm wondering if you're pulling my leg

Now it begs the next question - What the heck is grinding down the feather?? In my minds eye I could see a crotchity old guy splitting a feather with surgical like accuracy whilst hunched over an antique table lit by a green shaded bankers lamp.... I just can't imagine someone weilding a 10 inch craftsman 3/4hp grinder trying to 'trim up' a turkey feather...

I learn more here by accident then elsewhere by design!

I tried grinding feathers once in the end I had 3 bald turkeys and only 1 fletched arrow

Jdoyle, that just gives us more reason to kill our own turkeys-we need left wing feathers.

I guess it's a good thing that I returned the LW Bitz & got the RW Bitz 'eh?

Thanks!
