Default How do you shoot your bow?

Do you shot with an open grip with a wrist sling? Or closed grip without one. Will shooting an open grip only help if you torque your bow? I have had some people tell me that this will improve accuracy. I don't "death grip" my bow but it is not an open grip. After the season is over should i switch? Is a gloved hand hard to get in the sling? Thanks for all of your help -sam

I use somewhere between and open and a closed grip. Open hand with index finger and thumb wrapped around...loosely. I do use a bow sling but I don't think that with this grip I really need it. It does however give me a saftey net so to speak from dropping my bow. It's a long way to the ground.

The bit about the gloves is a concern. If you are using heavy gloves or have some of the thinner saddle cloth ones, it can be a bit tricky to get your hand in there. The sling I have is by Browning and has a buckle that is petty easy to open and lengthen the loop for use with gloves.

Started shooting with a wrist sling this summer. Now I use a slightly high grip that is completely open. I was torqueing the bow badly before this and now it is much better. I was twisting the fat, old-style Mathews grip and flinching my fingers closed at the shot for fear of dropping the bow. Two problems solved.

Gloves complicate wrist slings a little but you should be able to adjust the sling to accomidate your gloves. You don't want any pressure/hard contact on the sling, so watch out for that.

Slings are pretty cheap so you can try one and if you don't like it then you aren't out very much $$$.

I use a sling & a loose grip. Recently I have been drawing the bow with an open grip, then just kind of resting my fingers around the grip. Works well for me.

What happens after the shot when you shoot with a completely open hand & sling?

I shoot with fingers just loosly around the grip and thum and fore finger just touching and with pinky out on the stabilizer. I used to have trouble with torque but I fixed my trouble with one easy step

I bought a BOWTECH actually two of them

really the grip on them really helped me with the problem, they fit my hand better than any other bow I have shot.

I simply grab the SOB by the balls and make it shoot. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Firm closed grip, heel of the hand down, locked elbow, and a tense, rock solid arm. Point the thing at the very center of the target and make the arrow go there. Sling? We don't need no steenkin' sling! <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

Best thing I can tell you is to log onto &quot;bowsite.com&quot; Click on Features, then Practical Bowhunter. You'll get quite a good explaination of how to Grip (NOT) a bow and pictures to-boot. Really the best explaination I've ever seen on the subject. Remember to shoot the bow. Let the bow shoot the arrow.
AK, what do you think you're shooting. A battering-ram? The lad asked an intelligent question. The least it deserves is an intelligent answer.

BGfisher, Guess you missed my point. In other words, rather than using a relaxed open form, I prefer to take charge and muscle the bow through the shot. No open grip, no high loose wrist, hence...no sling needed. I think the one-liner sums it up a little more clearly though. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I shoot straight limbed traditional bows with low grips that tend to want to master the shooter if the shooter doesn't take charge of them. Not quite battering rams, though they do send heavy arrows to hit like one. I watched a guy try to shoot a Howard Hill longbow with an open grip once. It flew about 5 feet away from him. The bows owner just laughed it off, but the poor shooter had the most panicked look about him. They're tough bows though, so no damage was done.

thenuge15, I shoot my bows without the grip. I position my hand on the riser and then hold it there with tension on the string. My hand is always relaxed and I use a sling. The most important part of this is consistent hand placement. Keep the hand relaxed all the way through the shot, from draw to release. Don't grip the bow as you come onto the target and aim. Let the tension from pulling the string keep the bow in place. Don't grab the bow at the shot, let the sling catch it, it won't fall on the ground. As I'm sure you know, follow-through is very important. Don't drop your bow arm until the arrow is where you sent it. It's not hard to shoot with a glove and sling. Just loosen the sling to accomodate the glove. I always wear thin gloves while hunting. The sling should be loose at all times. You want it to catch the bow, not hold it in place. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Phil.
