Default RE: Consistent Spine or Straightness for best groups

A bunch... Thanks.

It's looking like the money that's not yet in my pocket is burning it's way through and some ACCs are definitely coming my way. I assume the smooth polished finish they tout is teflon rest friendly, as opposed to the rought goldtips I've been shooting, which chew them up pretty quickly. Is the ACC finish glossy or matte?

Also, I'm shooting a Diamond Hornet with the Bowtech post feed single cam set at 70#s with a 28" draw. Finished arrows will be between 26-28", with a 75 grain tip and 3 4" feathers. Easton's web site says 3-49 spine. Do you concur? Would this change if I went to a 100 grain tip and 3 4" vanes?

I don't know of a dealer around here who handles them, but I noticed BPS has a 1/2 shafts for $69, this may be the way for me to go. I haven't needed a dozen arrows for many many years...

RB,

I'm on my way into a meeting at work, so I can't elaborate further at the moment but for the first set of specs you provided (75 gr tip, feathers)...a 3-49 should be right on...especially if you shoot a loop.

Actually, I'm currently shooting a Tru Ball speed nock with my release on the string right under the arrow. Does that change things? I most probably will be giving the magnocks a go, and will then have to use a loop or a gator jaws type release, which I've been wanting to try for some time now anyway...

RB,

Thanx..I did not see your reply..

I still think the 3-49's would eb OK, but they MAY be on the edge, spine wise..depends on how short you cut them. 26" or so and they should be fine..28" and they could be borderline.

A loop generally makes arrow spine less critical.

Since I'm shooting a drop away, would you recommend I go up to the
3-60, as there is a chance I will shoot them between 27-28"?

Is there smooth polished finish glossy or matte? Any shine concerns when hunting if they're glossy?

Hmm...tough call..I'd hate to say one way or the other...The PF cams like a stiff arrow....at 28" I'd side on the stiff side and go with the 3-60's, especially if you are using feathers...(they reduce spine as there is less weight at the back end of the arrow)..let me ask you this..what size Goldtip are you using? and do you think the spine is too soft on them?

They are a "matte" very smooth finish...not as dull as some, but not glossy...I've never had a glare problem...they do not wear on your rest as bad as Goldtips...

Hope that helps!

I'm currently shooting the 5575s, but do not feel qualified to answer your spine question. I can get a bullet through paper, but have never paper tuned at various yardages, usually only 4-5 feet away or so, the 5575s are two years old and the hunter grade, so the spine and tolerance are probably all over to begin with. As long as I could hold a huntable group I was happy. Now it's no longer good enough.

I went with a drop away to negate the spine issue, but for supreme accuracy, now I know I still need to pay close attention to it. I ultimately want my set up to go right where I aim it, time after time, from arrow to arrow. If it doesn't, I want to know I was the weak link, not my equipment. To me it's all about eliminating variables. Hopefully the ACCs sporting Magnocks will do this for me. Time will tell, and then so will I

Thanks for all your help

Well.. I have something of a cheaper way for you to find out.

Get yourself a XX78 or XX75 2314 arrow shaft (with super-unibushing). Set it up with the same point and feathers you would use on the ACC. If this arrow tunes and groups well, the 3-49 should work fine. The 2314 is ther same spine as the 3-49..the component weights (nock insert, etc) are different and tend to make the 2314 a bit softer in spine when set up apples to apples.

If you went from a 75 grain tip and feathers to a 100 grain tip and vanes it would likely keep spine the same...as the vanes at the back would offset the greater weight at the tip (adding weight at the back increases spine, adding it at the front decreases spine)

As I said before..this is a tough call...you are right on edge weight-wise and are uncertain of arrow length and whether you would use a loop...and the effects of the magnock is unknown too...too many unknown variables for me to hazard anything other than a best guess.

Ok. I'm confident arrow length will be 27". My understanding of the Magnock system is that it negates to some degree the effect of too weak a spine due to the way the arrow leaves the string consistently and with light pressure, reducing arrow paradox. I will either shoot a loop or use a double caliper loop type release, like the Gator Jaw, probably will try this release. The effect to the arrow should be the same as using a loop.

Based on this, am I still right on the edge of 3-49? What would go wrong if I just went with 3-60 instead? Bob Ragsdale says a little stiffer is better than a touch too weak. With a straight down the pipe over and under the nock release and a drop away rest, I can't see where the 3-60 would hurt, do you?
