I'll have to echo the "shoot various bows and manufacturers" message. Don't be distracted by the vast marketing blitz and $$$ that is put behind some bows. Pick what you ultimately feel most comfortable with and one that fits into your budget....just don't forget to shoot/pick a <font color=blue>Martin</font id=blue> <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I found the ultimate hunting bow this fall and it is Mathews Legacy.
We have sold lots in shop I shoot for and cant seem to keep in stock.
I love mine, its just a fun and smooth bow to shoot. Do yourself a favor and just go shoot one and see if you agree.

From what I am hearing, you might want to wait a few months because there is some very cool new stuff coming out. PSE's line is already out and if you go to another forum which is mentioned in a few posts you can see what Hoyt and Martin will have coming out. Also, there is a very interesting thread buzzing about BowTechs future offerings. If Merlin is interesting you (which it should) I would email Pinwheel12 directly and he will point you in the right direction. Mathews hasn't made any announcements yet, and after the little trinkets they put on their bows last year I don't blame them.<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I would like to know why you aren't a big fan of Hoyt though JimDub? I got the impression from your post that you though Hoyt bows were only for target archery. Was I mistaken?
Ditto on the Merlin/Bowtech comments. They both make fine bows.

Actually, some of these guys can make money if he buys their bow!
My opinion is that for hunting, fit, finish, tolerances, limb pockets, etc are of little importance. Every manufacturer out there, makes several bows that will do the job for hunting. You might want to pay more attention to things that are important for hunting. What ATA suits your style of hunting best? How quiet is the bow? This can be very important to some hunters. Is the brace height suitable to get good clearance on heavy hunting clothes? Is the weight in the range you want for carrying in the field?
If speed is important to you, then find out which bows are fastest that meet the other requirements that you may have. The reason there are so many choices in bows, is because there are so many opinions of what will work best. I will also venture to say, that every major manufacturer makes quality equipment that you can expect to hold up for many years. In the end, each bowhunter will have to do quite a bit of testing and research to find the bow that meets their needs.

I'm with the other guys, you need to go to your local shop and shoot several bows to see which one is best for you. Personally I shoot a Jennings G2 and have been very pleased. Its 31" axle to axle, so its a good treestand/ground blind bow. Its lightweight and shoots very good for a short bow. No hand shock and very quiet. This bow comes with an optional string stop that greatly reduces string vibration, but I ditched it. Reason being is that it was wearing my cables out so I put the regular cable slide on it. I don't have any string silencers on the bow and it still shoots smoothe and quiet. Just the thump of the arrow and a little bit of string vibration. I have had several people pick the bow up and make the comment that it feels like a Mathews. Also, I had one guy tell me that the G2 and the G2XL are the only two compound bows he could shoot with fingers and still hit where he aimed. Might not be for you but its worth looking at. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Good luck and I hope you find the right one.
