Default String/cable stretch question

I had new cables and sting installed this year. I probably have around 3-400 shots on it now. I initially tuned it to a bullet hole, and planned to adjust it as things settled in after a 100 shots or so. It never seemed to move, so I sighted in and thought I was good to go.

The last visit to the range, I noticed it seemed like I was getting a touch of funky flight. Looking down, where my arrow was resting perfectly horizontal from string to rest, the rest end now appeared to be lower.

I checked it with a square, and it was. I just shot through paper, and I am in fact hitting fletch high, but in addition I am now off nock left as well. This suprised my, as I didn't think string/cable stretch would affect my left and right. Should it?

Anyway, to get the bullet back, my arrow is now MUCH closer to the riser, close enough that by eyeballing it, fletch contact appears possible (I shoot 1 fletch up, two out, with a drop away), but the paper doesn't bear it out.

I plan to re-visit the range this afternoon to see how things are flying and adjust my sights, but man, I'm confused. Could something else be going on here?

Range,

Hopefully you put timing marks on your bow when the new string and cables were installed <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle> That way you can tell if your string has stretched and where your bow timing is. If so put some twists in the string or cables to put your bow back in time. Then retune your bow! Depending on what your string and cables are made of will determine how much stretch you have gotten. By now your string and cables should be settled down and shouldn't stretch much more.

Like an idiot, no I didn't put marks on my cam. However, I have installed a no peep, and the bow doesn't really feel like it's drawing longer, and the no-peep is still right on the money.

The string and cables are #8125. The only things that have changed from shooting good to not shooting good, which seemed to take place overnight, is I installed a set of SVL leeches and had my arrows refletched, but with the same size feathers, 4&quot; parabolic.

I can't say the leeches are doing much for me, as my bow was whisper quiet to begin with, but I bought them on clearance last winter and was curious. I think I'll take them off (they've lasted about 30 shots by the way ), and start my tune job from scratch.

I don't know what the heck happened, but I'm perplexed. Last week I was shooting the tightest groups ever, now I'm having trouble holding 4&quot; at 20 yards. I'm lost.

Can you please explain about the timing marks on the cams? Where do you put them and is it apparent when your string/cables have begun to stretch according to the marks on the cam? I will be replacing the string on my bow this winter for the first time. Is it customary or a good idea to replace string and cables at the same time?

Lady Arwen,

It is a good idea to replace the cables and the string together if you do not have timing marks on your bow. The proper length factory spec. string cables should put the bow in time. I mark my bows without factory timing marks on the cam/wheel(s) where the limb passes over the cam/wheel(s). As a string or cable stretches you will see the timing marks move off where the limb passes over the cam/wheel(s). In order to put the bow back in time, it has to be put in a press and place turns in either the string or cables depending on the stretch to reposition the marks on the cam to the limb. Once you know where the proper timing marks are, you can replace the cables about every other time that you replace your string.
