Could someone help me on a bad habit?
Deer season is here and I have a bad shooting habit when it comes to deer. I missed a few deer last year because of this habit. What happens is that right before I release the arrow I jump the bow and the arrow goes right over its back. I know you really cant control buck fever, but is there any advice you can give me on helping this habit? By the way, I shoot at targets and have real good groups, its just when I shoot at a deer. Thanks

I agree with Siskyou, it does sound like you may be peeking to watch the arrow. I had this when I first started, but quickly gave up on it when I missed a few.
Here is what I do. If you hunt with a gun, you can't see the bullet, so you don't bother. You continue to watch through the scope. Well, you can do sort of the same thing with a bow. Calm yourself as much as you can before the shot and calmly center on the spot you want to hit. Then when you release, hold the bow still and watch the deer through your sight. Most times, you will be able to get a glimpse of your arrow fletching disapearing into the deers' chest. But you must remember, dont worry about where you hit it when you shoot, worry about that after you climb down from your tree and look at your arrow. Have complete confidence in your shot, the rest will take care of itself.

When you have deer at a distance to you or deer you do not want to take, (practice on them). Draw, look at the spot you want, put your pin on it and HOLD. After a few seconds let down, you have to get use to the feeling of being at full draw on an animal. It does not matter if the deer is at 100 yards do this every chance you get and the fever will supside eventually.
Good luck and just breathe.

A sure fire way to fix this is a piece of fishing line with a chemically sharped hook attached.
What you do if you are in the habit of lowering the bow at the shot you attach the fishing line to the bottom limb and put the hook on your bottom lip and vice versa if you lift the up as you take the shot.
This is in fact an old golf coahing tip to stop people from lifting their head to see where the ball is going before finishing their follow through.

Ask yourself "Do I have my pin on the spot"? This will bring you back on focus, and you'll be able to execute the shot perfectly. This does work. Be safe. Shoot Straight

kreg,
I would allow a few deer come in to your stand and simply watch them. Let some deer walk, get used to having the deer come in on you, it should help control the anxiety attacks. You will become more relaxed by not having the pressure to make the shot as you condition yourself more.
Ausie,
Do you pull teeth by tying a string to a door knob too? <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
Aim Hard!
