deer cooler
I have heard that a 10,000 btu window unit can be temp-converted into cooling a locker for short periods. Has anyone done this? In particular, I would like to know how to replace or bypass the thermostat.
I know the HVAC folks say it won't work in theory, but the rumour is that it does if luck prevails...
Thanks,
Scott

Thanks nodog, tried that but it shuts A/C off entirely - some kind of short protection maybe. The controls are solid-state, the A/C came from Sam's Wholesale, a 12.5k BTU.
If I could get the thermo bypassed where the compressor runs constantly, I'll put a 110 volt electrical thermo between the wall plug and the A/C and set to about 40 or 42 maybe. I just need this thing to work for a maybe 4 weeks total during the season.

I actually thought about making a deer cooler out of an old fridge. Gut the fridge out, place a hook on the top and just de-leg the deer and hang it. I bet you could regulate the temp pretty easy. I bet you could do it for just about nothing. I see in the paper classified sections people giving away old refridgerators, or at low cost. Just a matter of finding one that you could work with.

From the information I have gathered on this subject , an air conditioner is to keep the room it is conditioning at 10 to 15 degrees below that of the outside air and that is why it won't work for this purpose . What you need to do is look at making a walk in cooler and forget about the air conditioner idea . That is what I was told. Best of luck to you.
