Hot Spots
I just took my Labrador to the vet yesterday because of missing fur and raw skin on his head and front leg they said it is hot spots and shaved the areas and gave us medicine , they put a cone around his head which is quite annoying since he is bumping into everything with it and cannot go up and down the staircase because he lowers his head when he climbs and the cone hits the steps. Does anybody else experience problems with hot spots and have any advice on keeping them from coming back.
Just to vent a little I never experienced this problem with my other dogs so I took him to the vet I cant believe that a ten minute visit cost $230 I remember when I had a wisdom tooth extracted it took about an hour or at least felt like it and that cost almost the same

Things that help
Keep Kennels clean
Always use flea/tick medication
any wound or sore address promptly with blue-coat or 3in1 horse dressing.
The best thing for a hot spot or mange

Hot spots can occur for a variety of reasons, some dogs seem pre-disposed to getting them. I have been very lucky, but did have one dog that got them every year. Best thing I have found is Gentain Violet, you can get it at your pharmacy and it is less expensive that "what the vet will sell you" or the feed store for that matter. May want to wear gloves and apply with a cotton ball to the area affected. It is the same thing as "blue-coat" for the most part. Nitrofurizone "puff" powder will also work wonders. As already stated 3/1 horse coat is also good, you have him on flea/tick control year round so that is a plus. Good Luck!!

BB. Yes, I know they look awful..sometimes really bad. One thing I had thought about is some folks may have told you to use pure hydrogen peroxide. In and of itself is a very good thing for initial cleaning period. You must rinse and irrigate the wound after use because it will continue to "eat" at the raw skin and the wound will not heal properly. Good thing to use for inital cleaning but make sure you rinse the area well. I realize that was redundent (sp) however, would much rather be that than have a superficial wound heal more slowly .
