You are not far from some very good bow hunting.you have to do the home work and do a lot of scouting though.I haven' t hunted the refuge in about 4 yrs but from 1970 till then I took deer every year there. The only reason I don' t hunt it now is that I hunt a private club on down the river.Thats the Uwharrie game lands, there are small particles scarted and some of the best hunting, especially with bow are on these parts.

Edgecombe is below Rocky Mount in the Tarboro area. The Tar River flows through this area and there is lots of farm land. The deer herd is something like 40 deer per sq. mile. There is both dog and stand hunting. I used to hunt there for 13 years on a private farm until it was leased to a hunt club. It was too far for me to travel, about 4.5 hours driving time. The place is loaded with deer. I once saw 34 deer one morning and finally shot one doe, I never saw a single set of antlers that morning. I did take a few worth mounting as which I did in other trips though. If I lived near enough to the area I would join a club that does not dog hunt if I was you though. There is nothing wrong with dog hunting if you like it. Four of us used to go down and hunt 4 or 5 days and would take deer in the teen numbers. We were close to Princeville and Farmville outside of Tarboro.
