RE: 338 for the south
My grandfather that lives in Alabama used to hunt deer with the 338. As a matter of fack, the first deer I ever killed was with his 338. He has now switched to a 444. He is 80 years old and prefers to anchor them with the 1st shot.

A 444 leaves a BIG hole! My grandpa used one of those too with handloads. He hurt his back and uses a 223 now and kills just as many deer.

BIG BOOM. Yes, I use one and I livein Florida. You must anchor Your deer now !! I hunt in a 3'200 acre swamp and if you loose one in there You will loose it for good gators panthers and yots. I hand load 250 G round nose Hormady bullets at about 2300 Fps. The deer just flip right over and stop moving, no tracking just fresh veneson.
