Hawgz - I haven't seen any sign of rutting activity, but I haven't been hunting that much this year...been building a house. But my neighbor said that he saw a buck running around with his nose to the ground like he was trailing a doe...he thinks they're coming back into the rut. I hunt around Sheridan, though. I dunno what the deer are doing in your part of the state.

I also hunt in southern Arkansas around the Magnolia area. Mid November I saw what I thought was the beginning of the rut. A few smaller bucks chasing does. This soon died down to nothing. During this period all the scrapes had been abandoned and the bucks were seeking and tending the does. Not a whole lot of movement since around Nov. 16 in our area. I spoke with a camp to our south and sure enough the same thing. Now with Dec. approching I see the scrapes being opened up again, which tells me that bucks are about to get looking again ( or for the first time ). I would expect to see plenty of rutting activity during the first week of Dec. due to the cooler weather that should keep them moving and the does looking for food. We had one of the best acorn crops in our area that I can ever remember. Deer didn't have to move far for food. This could be some of the reason for low sightings. Good luck to all. Hang in there. The best is yet to come.

Soarkrebel I read your story about the doe in the other forum! I have never seen (or heard) that behavior before. That must have been pretty interesting to hear. I hunt on the eastern edge of the Ouachitas, just south of Lake Winona in Saline County. Monday was the first sign of rutting activity I had seen. I'm hoping to catch another one with "love" on his mind!

well, I'm about right smack in the middle of you arkies.
I live 20 miles east of EL dorado.
I hadn't been huntin since last friday, but I'd goin this evenin.
I agree also, that the sightings of deer are down because of the abundance of acorns. they can eat, sleep, have sex, whatever right
in or close to their beddin areas. they don't have to move around.
same thing last year.
I hope next season our acorn crop will be down a little.
at least enough to make the deer have to search a little.

What with last week being thanksgiving and all, had to go visit the outlaws for dinner, didn't get out much to hunt. I did get to do some skeet shooting with one of their neighbors though, so that was fun. Everyone was wondering where I went to, they should have known to follow the gunshots. Now it is back to the bow, and I am sure to have better luck now. I always seem to see more when I am bowhunting.

The best of luck in all your hunting endeavors!!!

God Bless,
Dave

Yesterday most of the yearlings i saw were not with momma. i did have one group of six that had two older does and yearlings. watched two spikes run does for two hours.
Saturday i let a friend hunt my penthouse stand so his son could shoot his first deer at 13. gonna try for a does . a nice buck steps out and he missed three times!!!! said he was probably 16" 8 pt nice mass.
i didnt know the kid had all ready missed like four deer this year.
my penthouse is my sacred ground!! i think i'll not do that again!!!!

bogobble if the kid could shoot i wouldnt mind. i only let kids or me hunt it. but shoot at my friends and spook them like that!!
Yesterday morning i was sitting up there drinking a cup of coffee and a doe came out and stared at my penthouse for a long time. it was like she was wondering if the big boom was going to go off again. they usually never pay any attention to it or me drinking my coffee cause i only shoot at good ones once.
I hate to be a jerk to my friend but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.
