junkman, there is no such thing as being over gunned for coyotes, unless of course, your trying to sell the pelts. But, the 25-06 would be a good choice, especially if you were using the same rifle for deer hunting. The .223 is a great choice for coyotes, but a bit lite for deer.

This is what I bought for my first time coyote hunting. I'm waiting to go when the snow hits...pelts should be thicker then...anyway, it's an NEF Survivor in .223.

Here is my "yote buster." Its an H&R .223 with a Harris Bypod and Leupold Rifleman 2-7x33 scope. My load consists of Winchester cases, CCI 400 primers, 27.5 grains of W748 powder and a 45 grain Speer SPT. I have just started using this load this year, and have only killed 3 jackrabbits with it. I am getting about 1" groups at 100 yds as long as I don't screw up. I also might have permission to hunt on a couple of hay farms that are over-run with jackrabbits, coyotes, and bobcats!!

Thanks for the answers. I am also thinking of the H & R/ NEF single shot rifles. I will try to sell the pelts if I find a buyer. It's IL so using the rifle for deer is not an option. It's more fun with a bow anyway. I just don't think I can get a coyote into archery range (20 yd).

Of course you can opt for .223 or .22-250 as well.

NUMBERFARMER- where are you finding 225 ammo?? my buddy had one and ended up selling it because he got tired of reloading for it. it shot good but he just didn't have the time to spend working up loads.

A couple of my favorite coyote busters are this .17 HMR( new toy ) for close in work and the .243 for all other distances. The .17 has taken a handful of coyotes thus far and the .243 has taken hundreds.
The .17 is a Savage with a 6-18 x 50 Bushnell Banner Scope and a Rifle Basix trigger.
The .243 is a Remington 700 VS in a Choate Stock and is wearing a 6.5 - 20 x 50 Leupold Long Range scope. It shoots 55 grain ballistic silvertips at just over 4000 fps.
