Hornady is at it again with a 20gr xtp 17 hmr round, its controled expansion. I think the veloctity is around 2350 with it, not bad. Its controlled expansoin, so it should work on anything you dont want to blow up.

Consider a .17 remington. I have a remington 700 LVSF that I have been real impressed with at the range. When it hits something it usually explodes. With a v-max bullets traveling at 4100 fps insides will vaporize on impact. I'm looking forward to getting out in the field with this thing.

You should realy do well with the 17 Rem. One man I talk to on the net loves his. It dont exit coyotes and leaves nearly NO visible pelt damage. Said it just liquifies the insides lol.

I would go .223 rather than .22-250 because i've heard that the .22-250 creates more pelt damage if that your game, and if your shooting smaller varmints all the time like me then the .223 is more economical. I have the .17HMR and i don't think it is big enough to take a yote humainly unless you got a good shot and place it in the skull. .223 is dead smack in the middle between .17HMR and .22-250, i think

.17 is too light for coyotes in my opinion. I won't even take one of them things squirrel hunting.
I think .22's are too light for coyotes too. If you're going to use a .22 caliber, use a 22-250.
223, 243, 270, 30-06 all work for them.
I'm a firm believer in "there's no such thing as overkill." But if you're looking for minimal pelt damage...223 or 243 will be ideal.
