I'd reccommend an NEF Handi-Rifle in .223. You can get them here for just under $200, and the 223 is an inexpensive caliber to buy shells for.

I have one and it's a great shooter.

.223 is a good caliber. Not for rabbits or any small game you would want to eat. If you are going out just to blow animals up then it works great. I use a .223 and .22-250 for groundhog. I also use a .17 HMR for varmints and know people who claim that it works great on foxes and coyotes. I'm still thinking it's probably not the best for coyote. So I would lean towards the .223. Just make sure you get a high grain bullet that doesn't fragment if you want to actually eat the rabbit/ smaller game. It will just poke a hole through it and not blow it up.

just use differant shells for differant game and you can use the .223 for about anything. soft point or hollows for coyotes and a full medal jacket for the rabbits. full copper jackets will not blow the rabbit apart. just a small hole in and a small hole out. it does not take much to stop a rabbit.

Take a look at the Savage bolt actions, they are reasonably priced and are known for their accuracy right out of the box.Definately go with the .223 if cheap ammo and accuracy/knock-down power out to 300-400 yards or so is your criteria.

The 223 is hard to beat when given the parameters you have stated. You can buy all the over the counter ammo you need to do all the things you indicated. A used savage will offer you great accuracy in the price range you indicated. To make a short story long, I agree with the previous advice that has been given.

with a 223 on small game you want to eat use a FMJ. thats what I do the fmj is plenty to cleanly kill but the bullet goes clean through with minimal bruising.

NEF Single shot .223, Under $200 at walmart, Winchester sells a 40rnd box of .223 right now that goes for under what most 20rnd boxes sell for. Either that, or you're looking at something SEVERELY USED. I'm pretty certain NEF puts out a heavy bbl version too, at least they do in the Handi-rifle...I can't promise the heavy bbl handi rifle is under $300, but I'm pretty certain it is!!!

BTW, NEF is the same thing as H&R.
