Huntn freak I shot a 25-06 and a 22-250 both and the damage is usually more with the 22-250 . I was very suprised on the amount of damage it does .

It is just plain foolhearty to shoot at deer with a .22 cal. Use at least .243. The bullet designs for .22s are not meant for big game and even if they were, there is just not enough there.

25-06 is hard to beat, and the ammo is available here at lots of stores. Every gun store carries it and even the "Marts" sometimes.

It's a heck of a caliber. Head and shoulders above the 243 - due to bullet selection. The 120 grain Core-lokt will put any whitetail down, and the 80 grain ballistic tip will shatter any chuck. Either will do in a coyote...depending on what you want to do with the hide.

For every deer killed with a .22 there are at least 2 wounded. The 223 Rem is a VARMINT cartridge. Not suitable for big game.

Check your local game laws, In Minnesota a .223 is illegal for deer. The .243 is the smallest calliber allowed. I know in some states the .223 is legal for deer. Make sure you check before buying.

I know what he is looking for. A rifle that will do both jobs. The 243 Win is the minimum answer. I am so sick and tired of finding 22 caliber bullets in deer that I kill.

Yes, I know deer have been killed with a 223 Rem. They have even been killed with a 22LR. It just isn't wise. Sort of like shooting a moose with a 25-06 or driving a railroad spike with a tack hammer.
