Both those options are good. I love my ruger single six.. I only have the .22mag cylinder for it though. Squirrel hunting with a pistol is allot of fun and a good challenge.

My favorite firearm of all time is a Ruger Mark II stainless 22lr pistol, bagged plenty of squirrels with it over the years:

These Mark II's aren't available anymore, but their successor is just as good, with a few feature upgrades that a lot of people saw as improvements. I have a bunch of Mark I/II/III pistols, and one 22/45, really love the Ruger action.

I also have a Beretta NEOS, S&W 41, Colt Woodsman, and Browning Buckmark 22lr pistols, all very good pistols, some more expensive than others. The Buckmark and the Ruger Mark II's are my favorite (the latter taking top spot).

I'm also a big fan of the Ruger SP101 22LR double action as well.

If you're into something more powerful, the Taurus Tracker in 17HMR is a real treat as well.

Here is what I hunt squirrel with.
If I had the $ I would get a Ruger Mark 3 Hunting Model.

It is more fun to hunt anything with a handgun.
Even cans lol

The OP doesn't say where he lives but not all states allow semi auto handguns and rifles for hunting, my state does not. Check your stste laws before you buy.

Ruger makes a couple of models that would work well.

If you want to use a scope and are looking for a fine shooter I would recommend a T/C Contender or Encore with a .22 LR barrel. With the TC you can change barrels and use it for lots of other game as well.

I know you said handgun, but if you're not dead set on a handgun, i really like my .17 HMR. I love it for squirrels, coons, etc.

I am likening my Ruger 77 22 hornet. Down load the ammo to 1300/1500FPS and you have a center fire at 22lr fun and the distance of a 22 Mag.
