Maximum Range??
I am thinking about goin out coyote hunting but im not sure which one of my guns i should use. I was wondering how far a .22 could be effective? Is 100 yards possible. Either that ill use the .270 which will give me a lot more range but im not real sure on how far i will have to shoot anyway. What would your choice be? I have scopes on both so that definitely helps.
thanks. ryan

a regular .22 the range is probly 40 yards no more. The 270 is good for 400 plus. I would choose any of these. .22-250(300yrds).222(150yrds) .223(200yrds) .22mag(100yrds) .22hornet(100yards) 12 gauge with #4 buckshot(50 yards)
The yards may not be exact someone might be able to do better but those are my guesses. You can do longer shots with all the guns but those are the most effective yards.s

Please don't use a .22. I know we all do it sometimes, but not on any kind of a regular basis. You have to be within 40 yards with a .22, and then you have to take a head shot, which is a high risk shot anyway. I shot a yote last year in the head, skinned him out and the skull wasn't even cracked, the bullet was smashed flat on the surface of the skull, must have hit him just hard enough to kill him, but I wouldn't count on that very often. I'd use your .270 with really light, HARD bullets so that your entry and exit wounds are both pretty small.

i'm going to agree with nomercy,if you manage to get them with in 40 yards you might as well use a shotgun and then theres no question as to how far he will go.22 rimfires were not made with coyotes in mind.if your looking for a longer range challange then the 270 will work, but don't expect a sellable pelt when its over.

Buckhunter12, I would load your biggest rifle with the lightest bullets, This way you get killing power at long ranges, I personally have killed coyotes with a .22 wm at 100 yard Of coures hollowpoint through the vitals. I do agree with most people that a regular .22 is not sufficient past 50 yards.
