RE: Woodchuck Hunting
I don't "hunt" chucks...but I shoot a hell of a lot of them. (by that I mean that I don't set-up and wait for them too much) We built a new house 3 years ago on 6 acres in the middle of basically pastureland. I shot 19 in one day right after we moved in. Mostly with a 17hmr, some with a .223.
Over the past 3 years I've probably shot around 150 or so. I've killed up to 20 out of a single set of holes. I thought only prairie dogs were like this...but these things reproduce like rabbits. I shot two this year the last day of January...and there was snow on the ground.
I've probably killed 50 out of my front yard since we've moved here.
They've slowed considerably, and I only shot about 30 this year...mostly along my driveway. That's part of the problem...I have a 1600' driveway that runs on the high side of a drop-off. There are holes for darn near the whole length. My 4 year old loves to take a walk down the drive with me...and watch me shoot them.
The buzzards love me
