Default "THEE"...22

Everybody owns one...young hunters start with them...they are the true "tack driver".

I have a mossberg 146b (older) 22 and I want to know what the limitations of a gun like this are? What kind of groups are "possible" with this gun at what range? I know that this gun is not meant to hunt deer with but, I just want to get out and shoot. (I love it).

I'm looking at putting a Bushnell 3200 scope on this gun (mossberg 146b)...reasonable or am I asking to much out of this gun?

I know there is a such thing as overkill but from what I see at the board is that you can pretty well maximize your gun to a 1-3" group shooter with the type of scope you put on the beast. Am I right or wrong.

I vote for an all out thread on the pros and cons of the .22 LR...lets get busy.

i,m not familar with that gun either but will agree with mr owens on the inconcistantcy of some of the loads.the baush&lomb 3200 series scope is a fine scope that will compliment any rifle but it is a little over kill for a 22 lr.(just my opinon)also another way to get better accuracy out of it is before buying shells check the inside of the cover(maybe on the top or bottom)for the lot number.buy at least two boxes with the same lot number, this seems to help accuracy a bit.some times with different lot numbers on boxes of shells,it may require you to resight the rifle in when changing to a differnt lot number.the 22 lr is a good rifle for plinking cans, rabbits squirrels and what ever else you can get close enough to, but has limited range and power.alot of fun and cheap to shoot.

I'm not familiar with your rifle, either. I also agree a $200.00+ scope is an over kill for a 22. Bullets and scopes can and do impove accuacy. Before you put too much money in your OLDER rifle, make sure the barrel has not been shot out. Remember, you are the biggest part of accuracy. Practice! Practice! Practice! Good shooting and good luck.

Out of curiousity...what is the effective killing range of a 22 LR (assuming that you cn hit it)?

The Mossberg 22LR is my Grandfather's old 22. It's been shot a total of about 10 times until I recieved it.

BTW, what is the largest animal that you would shoot with a 22, ethically. I'm thinking a head shot at a coyote would be a bout the biggest.

Cheers

I try to get at the out side 1" at 50 yrds.I only head shoot squirels,3" group would miss a gray squirel.you have to keep the barrell very clean.I use a bushnell stright 4x50 on my rem 22.

If you're just going to buy the cheapest shells you can get, then 3" groups at 50 would be about as good as your rifle can shoot. If you get some fairly respectable shells, then sub 1" at 50 would be quite attainable. I agree that any variant scope on a .22 LR is a little overkill, but a scope on one is by no means ineffective. I even have a 4x20 tasco [about $8 at wally world] on my .177 air rifle. So might say it's a waste, but I've killed the same number of squirrels with it with less than half the shots as with open sights on the same rifle. I do agree, an older rifle, especially a mosberg, will be more accurate than what most people buy today.

GOTTA LOVE THAT MARLIN MAGIC!!!!

is the gun the old target model?? if not i duno nothin about the gun but about a 22lr...the round is great...i have a marlin 25n or sumthin...with a cheap 4x tasco on it...at 50 ft i can have a 5 shot group touching within a 1/4 inch i bet..its a cheap gun...but it shots...and about nomercys post...i have to dissagre about cheap ammo...with that same gun at 50 yds with the bulk ammo you buy for like 10 bux for 550 or sumthin at walmart...it will still hold a group under an inch maybe one flyer...the ammois ok for plinking but i like cci standards for cheap accuracy and consistancy...i really love shoting a 22lr...you can do it all day and not be sore...and its fun..i kno i will always keep a few around...even when im old...
