A question for all you beaglers
I have a 2 year old beagle that i want to train to hunt rabbits. I was wondering if its to late to start. His mother and father were hunters but i got him as a pet. Should i train him as if hes a puupy or is there a diferent method for older dogs?
Also, are there any websites that will help me?
Thanks, redneck

if its bred into him. it wolnt matter what age you start him he will run them.. how good will depend. find someone close with a couple GOOD rabbit hounds and turn him loose with them . that is the best way to train your hound at this age(or any age for that matter)

most of my small game hunting time is for rabbit. my cousin owns 6 rabbit beagles. he has 2 puppies, and they are catching on. and just like duckdog said, he/she will follow after the dogs. the best thing that could happen for your dog is to have him jump a rabbit. im not sure at your dogs age, but he/she may play around at the beginning.

Yes, he does play a little. I was wondering if you could do the same for a rabbit dog as you do for a coon dog and get a caged rabbit and let him bark at it then turn him loose to get him accustomed to it?

yes, i forgot to mention that. my cousin also has 5 wild cottontails in cages where the beagles are. he lets the rabbit out in the yard, and lets the puppies run/trail them. i recommend doing it in the backyard... but my cousins rabbits dont leave the front yard

train them exactly like coondogs but not up the tree lol but we just ty a string around a dead rabbits neck and run around with it in the yard and hide it. that works pretty good. or just stick a rabbit in its kennel and c whats happens. u wouldnt have to feed the dog that night. lol it should work out. only if coondogs were that easy

RE: A question for all you beaglers
I've got 14 beagles and he's not too old to start. Get you a tame rabbit and put it in a cage. Shoot a wild cottontail and make drags w/ it teaching him to use his nose. If there are any other beaglers nearby, see if you can run w/ them. Best scenting is on a damp cool day, not when it's hot & dry. Any other questions, just hollar.
