Problem with PA coyotes
I am not exactly new to calling but have been having a heck of a time trying to get a coyote in. Grey fox no problem, coyotes big problem. I live in northeastern pa. I use an e-caller with a wide variety of tapes, everything from distress to coyote vocalizations. I wear good camo and try to eliminate any unessary movement. I pay attention to scent control/wind direction. I have been experimenting with various types of decoys. I typically sit on a stand for 30 minutes. Last year a "coyote contest" was held in my area and over 600 guys entered. Approximately 16 dogs were brought in and half of them were shot in front of hounds. I managed to get three coyotes to come in earlier in the year to a pup distress call. They came in yipping and barking running circles around me and never presented a good clean shot(wish I had my shotgun instead of the rifle). What annoys me is I know there are animals in the areas I hunt. I don't believe they are called to often if at all. I hunt early morning and late afternoons. I'm dying to get one of these critters mounted. Thought I'd get one done with a snowshoe hare in it's mouth. I managed to get a few hares last year and put one in the freezer but couldn't come through with the coyote. Anybody out ther from my area got any advice?

RE: Problem with PA coyotes
the eastern coyote is a whole different beast then a gray fox.but it sounds like your doing every thing right except one thing, hand calls.although i have called in coyotes with my e-caller,my hand calls do it more often.its just something about e-callers that seem to turn coyotes off sometimes.myself and callers i have talk to about it all agree,e-callers are to repetitive.they work good on fox,not as well for coyote.pick up some hand calls, practice with them and then see what happens.

RE: Problem with PA coyotes
I've had the same problem in Sullivan County, PA. I've seen them, heard them and even had them eat 2 of my archery deer. I've tried calling them in but never had success. I think they circle down wind before coming in so the scent control is tough. We don't have the desert and praries like the western states so they have more cover to hide in. Most PA coyotes are shot by bear and deer hunters.
