Slingshots
I see there are slingshots capable of cleanly taking small game. Has anyone tried this? I tried once, using 50cal roundballs for ammo, but it was just so much fun shooting the thing I didn't get any hunting done. These are much more accurate than the ones I remember from my younger days. Problem is, they aren't built very good, the bands kept breaking on mine, and then the handle came apart. Oh well. I found a bowfishing slingshot that looked cool. There is also one that shoots a long arrow like spear (like 5' long) and is suppose to be able to take deer (more of a survival thing I think). It's not legal anywhere though.

kodiak, spearing is legal in Alaska, I know it has been done on black bears, and we are considering trying it for caribou.
I used to hunt with a slingshot quite a bit. I have taken a few hares, a ruffed grouse and a couple red squirrel with it. That was a loooong time ago though, but I still have the slingshot. I just put it away actually, I have it out in my front window to hit grizzlies in the butt that are trying to break into my building. I guess they really want in when I have a caribou hanging in the garage.

RE: Slingshots
The bear that I saw that was killed by a spear was over a bait station. The guy sat right over the top of the barrel, and waited there for the bear to come in and stick his head in the barrel. When the bear came in, he readied himself, got his right hand on the top of the pole and put everything he had into the bear. He held onto the pole after it went through the bear, and the blade was stuck in the ground. The bear thrashed around big time, and he finally let the pole go, having it almost nail him when the bear ran off. The bear went about 100 yards and died. The blade did not hit any vitals, but bled the bear out very quickly. When the bear was thrashing around at first, it chopped up his paw pretty bad. The guy had the skull and blade of the spear mounted on a plaque shaped like an over size spear blade, it looks real nice. It was about a 5 foot bear, but an unsizeable hunt he said.
Sounds like fun eh? <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
