.35 WHELEN AMMO
Hi guys - I'm not a reloader but I figured this would be the best place to ask ammo questions.I just bought a new Remington 7600 -.35 Whelen, I'll be using it to shoot some large bodied Maine whitetails and black bears from 20-200 yards. The following is some of the ammo that I've seen available on the net.I've always hunted with my '99' in .308 w/180gr. Federal ammo so if you could steer me in the right direction as far as which bullets will be best for my needs, here goes....Nosler Ammunition 225gr ballistic tip,225gr nosler partition....Remington 200gr PSP,250gr PSP......Conley Precision 200gr barnes x, 200gr hornady interlock, 225gr barnes tsx, 225gr swift a frame, 200gr nosler ballistictip, 225gr nosler partition.. Federal 225gr trophy bonded bear claw-but this has been discontinued so it will be in short supply from some of the local stores. If you know of any others I'll try them,I'll probably narrow it down to 2 or 3 and see which ones work best in this gun.Sorry for the loong post but I figure this could save me alot of trial and error........Thanks..

RE: .35 WHELEN AMMO
Hi DL:
To get the most out of the Whelan, you will want to use 225gr bullets, minimum, the 250 would be better. Short .35 cals like the .350 Rem outperform the Whelan with lighter bullets (200 - 225 gr) but not with heavier bullets.
I use the 200gr X, reloaded, 350 REM, which also has been discontinued. I would horde the Federal TBBC if you can find any. Otherwise, it looks like the 250 Rem loads...
You might need to take up reloading!!!

If you buy and use the 225 grain Nosler partitions, that one loadWILL work on everything you will hunt with that gun.
NP's are the "best all around bullet" when you want one load/bullet for many sizes of game animials with out haveing to resight for different loads.
225 NP's will easily out perform any standard 250 grain load.

IMO, from the bullets you listed, I'd select the 225 Nosler Partition and 225 Swift A-Frame.
I'd start reloading those two, and see where it leads. Looks like you'll be buying loaded ammo, so you can go straight to the firing range. See how your gun likes those two, and soak up a dozen phone books or so to see what the expansion will be like.
It's nice when you can stay at least 20 yards away from the big bruins isn't it. Kinda hairy when they get closer...
Someday the 35 Whelan is going to find a spot in my cabinet - just have to find or build one in left hand version! It'll probably be a build one.

Thanks guys - Local store only had Remington 250's- I'll use these to break it in and then pick up some 225's for hunting, probably NP or A frames, cant locate more than 2 boxes of the Fed. TBBC's-- Thanks again
