Does 22-250 take a large or small rifle primer?
I've taken up hunting with my girlfriend's dad and want to start reloading with him. He reloads a lot of 243 and probably some 308 as well. So he has whatever components are necessary to reload 243. My rifle is 22-250, so I need to get whatever else I'll need besides the stuff he already has. I believe I'll need primers, casings, bullets, and a die set. I plan to use his powder but if for some reason it doesn't shoot well I'll get some of my own.
Anyway, I plan to get 100 Remington Nickle plated casings, 100 Hornady 50gr V-max bullets, and a Lee die set. The item I'm unsure of is the primer. Will I need small rifle or large rifle primer? Also, does the die set come with loading specifications like powder weight or where will I find that information?
Thanks

great thanks
are small rifle and large rifle primers different diameters and specific to the casing or can you interchange primers to get different results just as you can vary the amount of powder?

There are standard and magnum primers in both sizes
The magnum primer,in simple terms has more fire to ignite larger quanites and or harder to ignite powder.
You can to a certain extent change primers to fine tune the load .
But you should return to a starting load and work up , because changing primers can change pressures .

Since your question in part was answered, they have many books on the market and the web on reloading and reloading charts.Read them, read them and read again. There is a lot to learn, and be safe, have fun, enjoy, and read. vangunsmith

Since the .22-250 is one of the smaller cases that uses a large rifle primer, I generally use one of the "colder" primers - like the Remington 9 1//2. In terms of powders, H-380, IMR4064,and WW760 are three of my favorites. The rest you should probably get from a loading manual. Also, the new Sierra 55 gr. Blitzking bullets have shot particularly well in several .22-250's of mine - might be worth a try. Expansion on varmints is great!

i noticed you were thinking of using nickle plated brass. its up to you but i wouldnt use it. its hard to resize and for starting to reload it will just be frustrating. i would go with the standard brass. 50 gr v-max will ruin a groundhogs or coyotes day..... alot. i use it in my 223 and not too many varmints like me. good luck with your gun.
