We were shooting at a target with a cardboard backing to it and plywood about 2 feet behind it, the plywood did have holes, but mostly from the bullet fragments. Even when we are shooting into a dead log, those things seperate from the jacket first thing. You can always find a pile of jackets near the log, and in large pieces. They are good for target shooting, and white tail, but I aint takin my chances on those bullets with an elk hunt! I am new to the sport, but bonded core or partitions seems the best route to take. EJ

Am I expecting too much of the cheap remington soft points? I am guessing the idea of the Un bonded core bullet with the thin jacket IS to seperate quickly. There is usually one larger chunk of lead after each shot and several fragments. I wouldnt expect that flimsyness should cause it to seperate that quickly though? EJ

Well ej, the only experience I have with remington bullets is coreloks and no they won't separate like that whatsoever. In fact, matchkings from sierra won't separate like you describe. Seen Caribou and everything else shot with them.

I hate the bullets for other reasons.

I use Nosler Ballistic Tip 130 grainers for my 270 exclusively. Only because they have proven to be one component in the most accurate load I found for it. But to say I use premium bullets all the time - no way. I use 139 gr Hornady SSTs in my 7mm-08. Good old Hornady Interlocks 180 gr in my '06, Sierra Pro Hunters 180s in my 300 WM and Nosler Ballistic Tips 50 grainers in my 223.
I might switch to premium bullets if I were going after big bears or other dangerous game, but not for groundhogs, antelope, deer, elk, black bear etc. Some of these are premiums others not. I use what is most accurate.
You may have had a defective bullet there wolf. It happens, even with premium bullets. The second shot brought the antelope down didn't it?
