I have no problem with the one umbrella rule the way it stands now. I use one and I think half the complaints are coming from guys who just don't want something else to carry. The use of an umbrella at the stake will do nothing but speed up shooting not slow it down. I think it actually makes it more fair to the guys who shoot later in the day when the wind has picked up. Shooting the IBO and ASA has definetly helped my hunting. If you can hold steady on a 45yd. target you'll be rock solid at a 20yd shot deer shot. So I totally disagree with those saying this does nothing to prepare you for hunting.

Hey High Country..... You would be better suited to shoot some IBO turnys before drawing that conclusion. Just get out and try it. Yes you are right about we are not hunting anything but foam here, and thats why we are not in tree stands either. This is a great game ....... and thats all it is . I have not gutted an foamed animal yet on the 3d course, but because of this sport I do gut alot of animals in the field.. The people that shoot 3D are very nice people ,but they are also very competive. All I am saying is to try us out and then make your conclusions.

OK, allow me to recant my last post! I still feel that hunting practice and 3-d practice is different. But, stating that this organization has nothing to do with hunting was not how I meant it. Of course anyone who knows much at all about the IBO, knows that there is alot of money from the org. that goes to various hunting related activities. Not the least of which is the bowhunters defense fund. As a bowhunter of 30 years, this org. has undoubtedly helped my favorite pastime immensely!
There, now I feel better. You guys should listen to what I think, not what I say!

UMBRELLAS ARE A GREAT ASSETT TO HAVE ON THE RANGE!! There is one per group the whole group gets to use it so it is benefiting the whole group.Every tool you have to use betters your chances at winning and yes that is what everyone wants is to win. Umbrellas are rarely needed but when the time comes to use it you will be thankfull you have it.Lets start supporting the IBO and quit critisizing the rules rules are made for a reason and not everyone will like them. They cant please everyone but they can please the majority.

And what if your group DOESN'T have one?
3-D ISN'T simulating bowhunting anymore??? What do that targets look like animals? Why do we aim at the animals vitals? IF 3-D WASN'T supposed to be a hunting simulation (at leasta hunting SHOT simulation) we would have spot targets at unknown yardages!
This "evolution" HAS gone the wrong way. If it weren't to the benefit of manufacturers to put money into the open class vs. the hunter class, we'd be better off. I DON'T blame them, but I feel the TOP money in IBO should go to the top Bowhunter class shooters (they ARE the B in IBO!) That won't happen, and I don't mind that much, but really...haveing someone hold an umbrella for you while your shooting at an "animal" how far from hunting CAN we get?

Stealth Force, 3-d archery has evolved into its own game. Why do we use animal targets? What type of targets do you want to use? If you have a good suggestion, I feel certain that Mr. Watkins will take it under consideration. Any time you shoot your bow, I suppose that is some type of hunting practice. I would not consider my practice for a 3-d tournament the same as my hunting practice. Set a large deer target out at 25 yards with a good hard quartering away angle... now tell me you would aim at the 10x ring if it were a real deer. I know I would not. The IBO already has an umbrella rule, and a 2 minute shooting time rule. I would be willing to bet that in many different scenarios, shooting WITHOUT an umbrella would push some of your better shooters closer to that 2 minute limit.
Hey Ken, I may not agree with every rule that the IBO has ever put into use....But I sure would`nt want to step into your shoes.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Well, like I said, if 3-d isn't hunting practice (unknown yardages, at an animals vitals....unless you make NEW scoring rings on 1/4ing away targets, you just use what you have) why not just put out a Vegas target at unmarked yardages. Then the 36&quot; stab,umbrella girls, and 6x scope wouldn't seem so out of place....at least vs. shooting a gator :-)
The rules seem to try to get as many as possible happy....so we end up with a dozen classes or so, and some of these classes start to take away from the original idea of 3-d shooting....unfortunately, these are the same classes that get the money (Not that I care about the money) and hence the attention, and press.
PERSONALLY, I'd like to see a pro HUNTER class, I'd like THAT to be the premire class. No umbrellas, no big stabs, no optics just guys shooting bows that at least mechanically would not be out of place in the woods (Yes, I do hunt with a 39&quot; ATA bow).

I always enjoy these umbrella debates, and I always respond the same.

Lets get rid on them.........and other hon-hunting essentials like:

Scopes, lenses, movable sight pins, long stabalizers, metal launchers, non-camo bows, tennis shoes, non-camo shooting outfits, ground shots, field points, small vanes, and finally, foam targets(ever see a foam deer in the wild?).

Hunting sport? How about shooting sport designed to be attractive for bowhunters.

Take away the umbrellas?

Next thing you know they'll be taking away my fleece handwarmer with heat packs, Gore-tex parka to keep me dry, webbed treestand seat to keep me comfortable all day, Lacrosse knee boots to keep my feet dry, srew-in steps to keep me safe, and my polypropele socks and longjohns to keep the chills off, all in an effort to frostbite my fingers, soke me to the point of pnemonia, give my rear end a rash sitting on an uneven saw-cut stump, have me wear hand-me down leaky snowmobile boots to eliminate some toes, use old warped scraps of lumber for steps to break my neck when they fail, and cover my skin in moisture holding cotton to give me hypothermia-all in the name of tradition and nostalogy because that's the way it USED to be, and should be.

You think while they are at it they will make me use a two-cam?

hey Jeff looks like you need to stick with the hunter class. Theres a class for everyone,umbrellas are a tool and if someone wants to use one then they should use one if not dont plain and simple. I have one but dont always use it but if I want to it is there and the whole group can use it. Rules are rules if you dont like them step up and voice your opinion. Or stick to the hunter class.
