RE: Permanent Stands on NJ's WMA's
As promised early in this thread I'm back with my observations;
CLINTON WMA IN NJ: I hiked around about half the available land in this small but nice looking WMA. Mostly whithin about 1800 feet of the office and parking areas as I'm new and this first day out for me was basicly a "dry run".
STANDS: Didn't see any whether permanant or temporary! Of course they may be on the part of the WMA I did not yet cover.
More later as I gather the info.
May your game bag always be full!

RE: Permanent Stands on NJ's WMA's
This past weekend I looked carefully for bow hunters and their stands while hunting the Pequest WMA for small game...and once again didn't see the bow hunters at all.
Must be the good cammo...or they are hunting much deeper in the woods than I needed to go for my squirrels?
As a newbie I'm happy to see that the horror stories of overcrowding and attitude problems at the WMAs have been greatly exaggerated...at least as far as my very casual small game hunts so far are concerned.
Hope you are all getting your deer!

P.S. My first ever squirrel tasted great!!!

IAMBOB, wait until the start of the Pheasant season for the overcrowding. It is reminiscent of the American Revolution with the redcoats advancing upon the Continental Army through farm fields.
Be careful man, and wear plenty of orange.

Stealthy: Thanks for the info, I looked in the digest and I see that the pheasant are state stocked game. My plan will be to switch to one of the WMAs that are not being stocked and keep on chasing them squirrels. I'll also avoid the 6 day firearm deer season this year.
TREE STANDS: I was out at Pequest again this past Saturday and finally saw one Temporary ladder type stand in use. Havent seen any permanent stands yet...
P.S. I'm saving up for a Matthews Legacy...It'll be a while before I get it and learn how to shoot it decently though. Maybe I'll be a bowman in two years or so. Until then...look out squirrels!!
Good hunting!

I went to the area I was muscled out of last year this past weekend. Whomever put the stands out left them there the whole year. 3 were knocked down and another was completely destroyed. For the record, I didnt do it! Not shedding a tear though.
Fall bow ends Friday and then Permit Bow kicks in. Things will thin out after that, until gun season comes in that is,,,,
Any day spent huntin, is better than any day spent workin,,

Just back from Pequest again, No permanent stands but saw three bowmen working together: 1st was about 25 feet up in a climber. Way up there! 2nd was standing at ground level, 3rd was prone and mostly covered. No hunter orange on any?!? High guy and stand up guy waved, I returned it and veered back to the road. Got my squirrels on the other side and saw a deer. Hope you got yours!
Changing WMAs next week to avoid the stocked bird hunters.
Good luck to all!

RE: Permanent Stands on NJ's WMA's
it is sad how guys claim to own an area ,i hunt a area that is county land we have seen maybe 5 other hunters in 10 years of hunting it is pretty amazing ,we climb mostly a few ladder stands as well ,we used to hunt from permanent wood stands now we know better ,two years ago we have a few areas we save for the rut we go out there and here are two stand sites with lock ons within 20 yds ,now the one tree i have hunted from at least 30 times so the tree is pretty tore up so the guys must have noticed that some one was hunting there they even put up cat eyes one on a tree that was next to the one i climb ,i would have never done this to them ,i wondered what to say to them when our paths met ,i never saw anybody hunt these stands but they may have hunted during gun who knows but even though it is legal i dont feel it is right ,if they hunted there stands on days when we werent in our stands that is fine ,now it is the rut soon and we will be in this area well see what happens .i will never resort to violence as no deer or my life is worth it ,i need to come home at night to see my son ,remember keep your heads and what goes around comes around and hopefully it will build up enough momentum to smack the livin **** out of them !
