Certainley welcome to comment - like I said, I was curious as to the connection to so many NJ posters. Not familiar with NJ regulations. What are your laws concerning the crossbow?

I keep hearing all these arguments about letting handicapped people hunt with a crossbow.
Well, is anybody concerned about the possibility that some of these people might get hurt or killed trying to climb into or out of a tree stand?
After all, hunting on the ground is a challenge.
Just a thought--after all, it is government that requires all kinds of safety devices on things like lawnmowers to protect people who cannot use things as they were intended. It is government who requires the use of seat belts and motorcycle helmets. It is government who is making laws against smokers. It is government who steps in to protect people from themselves. Maybe it is better if handicapped people stay out of trees. Perhaps government should make that decision too.

JBC,
You bring up a very good point. Your comment about "different hunting expierence" reminded me of just what it is I truly love about bow season. Its not the weapon, its the silence and peace. Sometimes we have to be reminded that "foot" tastes terrible. I firmly believe there is a place in the NY hunting world for Crossbows, I also believe that the "truly" handicapped should be allowed to hunt Cbow during Archery.

Steve,

I have interest in Xbows for handicapped in NY after I saw that is not currently allowed today, or at least only to the most severely handicapped. I also have interest in all other states with backwards game laws and regulations.

For your other question, in NJ someone with a disability can get a doctors note stating that they are unable to draw or hold a bow due to their disability. They can then apply to the state for a permit to use a crossbow during regular archery season. We've had this system in place for as long as I can remember and there isn't any push that I have seen to legalize crossbows for everyone during regular bow season.

Keep up the pressure. NYB needs to know they are dead wrong on this issue. Even otherwise great organizations can be wrong. Let them know they can be better.

I do believe unless I'm mistaken somehow, the bill is to legalize the use of the crossbow, and all mechanical devices on archery equipment. Leaving the DEC to regulate as they see fit. This is different from handicapped persons having to obtain a special modified permit for archery equipment at the present time.
Totally correct. That's my problem with the bill.

jbc, Did you read my posts. I obviously know its very difficult at this time for handicapped persons to obtain a permit for Crossbows. I even wrote why I thought that was. The point of both my previous responses is MODIFIED BOW PERMIT!!!!!!!!! I'll write it again MODIFIED BOW PERMIT. If one is able to obtain a permit for special archery modifications in NYS. Then why do we need the Crossbow to begin with.[8D]

Also what are New Jerseys current regulations on Crossbows, and handicapped people??

Buckalley,
I read your post and I don't think you understand how difficult it really is for a handicapped person to obtain a crossbow or "modified bow" permit in NY. If you can physically pull a trigger you need not apply.

Now you can go back and read my post where I tell you what the regulations are in NJ. Exactly how they SHOULD be in NY. That's right, bow your head in shame, NJ has more access for the handicapped than NY.

Depending on the disability, different people require different forms of assistance. While modifications to a regular bow may suit some, they do not suit all. This is where the crossbow comes in. It helps fill the gap for those disabled for whom a modified regular bow is not sufficient.

Please support crossbows for the disabled in New York.
