Default Pa Hunters-The Numbers Are Out!

GAME COMMISSION RELEASES 2003-2004

DEER HARVEST NUMBERS

Antlerless deer harvest is 2nd highest;

total harvest ranks 4th highest

HARRISBURG - Commonwealth hunters recorded the fourth highest deer harvest in state history, including the second highest antlerless deer harvest, during the 2003-04 seasons, according to figures released by the Pennsylvania Game Commission today.

Hunters took 464,840 deer - including 322,620 antlerless deer and 142,220 antlered deer - during the slate of deer seasons that ran from Oct. 4, 2003, through Jan. 10, 2004. During the 2002-03 season, hunters harvested an all-time record of 517,529 deer. Other record years were 2000-01 (504,600), 2001-02 (486,014) and 1995-96 (430,583).

"Given the challenges hunters faced - from poor weather to spotty food sources - they were able to fill their tags and move the overall deer program toward its goal of balancing the deer herd with its habitat and saving more bucks," said Dr. Gary Alt, Deer Management Section Supervisor. "Pennsylvania's deer management program is right on track. The Board of Game Commissioners, Executive Director Vern Ross and hunters deserve all the credit for making it happen."

Daily harvest information gleaned from hunter report cards detailed just how much of an impact weather had on hunting success during the two-week regular firearms deer season, particularly on the opening day and first Saturday.

"What we saw when we broke down the rifle season deer harvest by day was a dramatic decline on opening day and the first Saturday - down more than 20 percent from last year," Alt said. "However, the deer harvest during the second week - when weather conditions improved - was more than 20 percent higher."

Alt stressed that the effects of antler restrictions were in line with predictions made last year. (See News Release #18-03, issued on March 20, 2003.)

"In 2002-03, we had a higher buck harvest in the three-point area than we expected - due to a mild winter during 2001-02, and a tremendous acorn crop during 2001 - and that allowed bucks in those areas to put more energy into antler development," Alt said. "But with the harsher winter of 2002-03 and a poor acorn crop during 2002, bucks didn't have the excess energy to put into antler development, and we predicted that this year's buck harvest would decline."

Hunters purchased 946,037 of the 973,000 antlerless deer licenses allocated by the Game Commission. The antlerless harvest of 322,620 was comprised of 195,740 adult does, 58,720 first-year does and 68,160 first-year bucks.

The 2003-04 archery harvest was 65,060 (30,840 antlered and 34,220 antlerless), compared to the 2002-03 harvest of 69,648 (33,476 antlered and 36,172 antlerless).

"The most notable change in the archery season was that bowhunters were taking more antlerless deer later in the season than in previous years," Alt said. "Also, there was a decline in the archery buck harvest that can be attributed to the fact that hunters were required to adhere to new antler restrictions for the first time in special regulation areas, where archery hunters take their greatest number of deer, and an enlargement of the four-point area in the western part of the state."

Alt noted that the muzzleloader antlerless deer harvest increased over the previous year's by nearly 3,000. The 2003-04 harvest was 35,660 (1,240 antlered and 34,420 antlerless), up from last year's 32,640 (1,279 antlered and 31,361 antlerless).

"Muzzleloader hunters really seem to be enjoying the opportunity to hunt for deer when the weather is warmer," Alt said. "And in doing so, they really have been helping with the deer program by harvesting antlerless deer earlier in the fall."

Results of the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) are not available at this time. The agency is surveying all DMAP antlerless deer permit holders to learn more about their harvest and hunting. He also noted that the agency will provide a more complete analysis of the 2003-04 deer harvest at the Board of Game Commissioners meeting on April 19-20.

i read your post, but unless i am blind, i don't see anyplace where they compare this year's total buck numbers to your long term average. so, while this year's OVERALL harvest is your fourth highest, your increase in the anterless kill is what took up the slack. and while i know from what i have read that PA has a herd that needs some kind, any kind of help, QDM/AR advocates, these results show nothing but that people who hunted PA were very good at shooting does. jmho

Killing more does is just what needs to happen here.
The buck kill is down and that was the goal. We need to continue to kill less of our bucks until the buck / doe ratio gets more balanced and the average age of our bucks gets a little older. AR isnt the perfect way to manage but there is no perfect way to manage a whole state with various habitats, a million hunters and over 1 1/2 million deer.

To the well intentioned guys that say we are wiping out the herd, the next couple of years will prove one side or the other right. If the "we're wiping em out" camp is right, the kill numbers will crash soon. If the numbers gradually decrease, then the group that's behind the current plan will be proven right. The good news is that if the current game plan is wrong, the reproductive capability of the whitetail deer would allow the numbers to recover very quickly. The bad news is that if the current plan is right, it's still going to take a longer time for our forests to begin recovering.

The bad news is, if you believe the PGC stats, this years harvest allowed the herd to ncrease even more, and Alt's plan has been ineffective at controling the herd. The PGC said the anterless harvest of 352K anterless allowed the herd to increase by 1.6% and the herd has increased by 20% since alt took over in 1999. At the same time AR is adding more OW deer to the overbrowsed habitat and it adds the most deer in areas with the worst habitat. This is the exact opposite of what was suppose to happen

Just noticed something in this press release. All the numbers are nice neat multiples of ten. This obviously is the calculated kill not the actual reported kill and they have rounded the numbers somewhat. I'm not 100% sure but I don't ever remember the numbers all ending in zero before now. I wonder if the way they calculate the numbers has been changed.
If it's been substantially changed it could change the significance of the numbers just released.
(I'm behind the current plan but always have a general mistrust of ANY beaureaucratic entity and that includes the PGC)

This years buck harvest is the lowest since 1985. In the 10 years prior to 2000 our anterless harvest avgeraged 200K anterless /yr. The PGC clams the herd is increasing ,but that claim is not confirmed by the buck harvest. However, we harvested 77K BB in 2002 ,so it is understandable why the buck harvest was so low and it will be just as bad next year,if not worse.

The buck kill was supposed to go down.
Deaddeer, you complain about not enough deer, then you complain we aren't bringing down the herd. You try to compare the lower buck kill, under AR to past buck kills (comparing an apple to an orange) to prove that the numbers are down and then turn around and cite the PGC recent numbers that indicate the numbers are growing. to prove their plan isn't working because numbers are up?!?!?!?

It appears to me that you just don't like Gary Alt and will use whatever you can find to attempt to discredit his even if you wind up contradicting yourself.

It's clear you don't like Gary Alt. That is your right and I respect that but maybe you ought to stay on one side or the other while you try to discredit him.

sorry, forgot to add this in, while i do believe from what i have read that some kind of drastic measure needed to be done, i am not against the shooting of the doe to get the job done. i still hope to get down there to give it a whirl sometime, for either bear or deer. when you hear people from other states complain about PA hunters complaining, and being tired of hearing of it, just remember this, your herd is larger than most, heck, your doe kill last year alone is larger than the entire deer herd in VT!

Thanks Vtbuck

Nice to be reminded that we really have it pretty good here!
We're all caught up somewhere between how to keep it as good as it is and how to make it better. As I heard someone say not long ago.... The good old days of deer hunting are happening right now!

he buck kill was supposed to go down.
That simply is not true. Alt said the buck harvest would return to normal the second year of AR because we would be harvesting the buck saved by AR the previous year, but it didn't work. Since the PGC claims the herd is increasing ,even with the changes in the antler restrictions the harvest of 2.5 buck should have increased and combined with the harvest of 2.5+ the uck harvest should have increased.

I do not complain there are not enough deer, however I do believe that the new OWDD gaols are much to low and do not represent the true carrying capacity of the habitat. There is absolutely no reason to cut the herd in 5 C to 6 DPSM. That would be gross mismanagement and clearly shows the OWDD goals are outdated.

Alt said we would have more and bigger buck than we ever had before in PA and that his plan would balance the herd with the habitat. Neither objective has been met so his plan has failed.
