Maine bear referendum ... scheduled debate
CAMDEN (March 4, 2004): Maine's upcoming referendum on bear hunting techniques is drawing national attention and Merryspring Park will sponsor a debate and panel discussion on the issue at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9. The meeting is at the American Legion Hall on Pearl Street.
This will be a chance to hear leading spokesmen and other knowledgeable panelists on both sides of the question present their arguments.
The format will be as follows: Spokesmen from both sides — Maine Citizens for Fair Bear Hunting and Maine's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Council — each will be given a 10-minute presentation time and a five-minute rebuttal period.
Following the debate, which will be moderated by Merryspring Director Kerry Hardy, other panelists will be introduced and given five minutes to state their positions. There will be a brief intermission, and then audience members will have a chance to direct their own questions to anyone on the panel.
The question-and-answer session will go as long as time and interest allow. The program is expected to go until at least 9 p.m.
Those expecting to attend should telephone Merryspring at 236-2239.
The program cost is $2 for Merryspring members and $5 for nonmembers. Coffee, tea and homemade goodies will be available.
Merryspring is located at the end of Conway Road behind Graves' Supermarket plaza. Visit www.merryspring.org for general information about the park or call 236-2239.
