Gentlemen - I agree with the mismanagement of the PA deer herd. Cannot say for sure about the timber industry. If they are complaining about the deer populations they don't have a leg to stand on. The state forests througout NC PA have acres of trees dieing of old age. Why don't they do selective harvest in these areas? Probably because it will open up the canopy to allow for new growth with will draw more deer..... its a double edged sword.

bronko, want to hear TRUE story about our great DCNR.

logging trucks came to us and said,WE CANT GET TO OUR LOGS BECAUSE THE ROADS HAVE CANOPY OVER THEM AND SUNLIGHT DOES NOT HIT DIRT ROADS, SO WE MAKE RUTS SO BAD WE CANT GET TO TREES.

so, we had committee a few years ago backed by our local senator to look into it.

we asked the great DCNR to cut the trees back 15 ft on each side of roads so sun could dry roads out.

you know what they said, they said, SPROUL DONT YOU KNOW THAT A SPOTTED LIZARD lives in those rocks along roads and sunlight would kill them.

as paul harvey says, GOOD DAY!

wco told me about grant money,he is on here, i forgot his intials,i think like rwj or something.

next, i was with SENATOR,yes, i do have that influence but not as much now.

he is big insurance senator too,he backs them and his family is in it bigtime too.

he has broughtthat up many times behind closed door meetings in harrisburg.

my local state farm agent told me many times that state farm was pushing to have deer reduced in pa.
he hunts too and ALSO WANTED them kiled off.

he talked just like the DCNR boys do about deer.

you cant blame insurance co. for doing what they can to deer.

with all the FRAUD info that is given them, over 50% of wrecks that say they MISSED a deer ,never did.

they were speeding,fixing eye lases,cell phones,drunk,yelling at kids,falling asleep.

of course, you could say because you were in the insurance business, i am wrong but i feel the deer get blamed for too many accidents that they did not happen.
Sproul, you do your best to treat people with whom you disgreewith respect so I'm saying this with all due respect but that is absolutely not true. You are either telling stories or your being lied to.

Please name him. I challenge you and say that no senator ever lobbied against deerclaims on behalf of any insurance company EVER

Sorry Sproul I'm calling BS again. I guarantee that you cant name him either here publicly or to me personally via PM because there's no reason for an agent to have a problem with deer claims. deer claims= higher premiums. Here's a news flash for ya...Agents get paid a percentage of premiums so bigger premiums make the agent more money too!

Yep, it happens. I even know of an unscrupulous agent who alledgedly told a customer (his buddy)who was drunk and hit a tree to find a deer hide and drag it over the jagged edges of the damaged area to leave deer hair for the adjuster. But that doesnt change the fact that the Ins companies have that all figured out and the simple fact is that the more claims of any kind across a state or across a rating territory that they can analyze and predict will make them money.

When you win at the casino, you didn't beat the house. The house won as always because it took a slice of the money from the losers before paying the rest of it back out to you. Insurance companies make their money much the same way.

Yep, I spent 30 years at it and I'm saying you're 100% wrong on this one. No grey area here. The insurance companies do have powerful lobbies butthey simply don't try to change something that consistently makes them money. I worked with dozens of car insurance companies over the years and not one ever said boo about deer or deer numbers even here in good ol PA which has been number one for deer claims for a long time.

What happens behind closed doors is that they're quietly happy we have so many deer claims. It's simply a cash cow for them.

Oh and for the record, I worked in the industry but I will be the first to tell you I have no love for that industry. There are a some very unscrupuolous insurance companies out there. Some would sell out their mother to make a buck. There are enough bad ones to make me glad I'm out of it. One of the worst, BTW,is based right here in Nortwestern PA.Their name sounds kinda likea big lake in the area

i would never name anyone but i will tell you this, i am writing up what i would like to see in WMU2G on deer for meeting this month.

for 28 miles i think i can say around 10 deer last year from road kills by cars /trucks from what pen-dot told me .

half of those would not have been killed if truckers would try to work with us.

they travel in groups of 4 or more at high speeds and the deer miss the first one and jump behind second.

if they would not do this to keep their speed up,many deer would not be hit.

but they get paid by trip, so traveling like this they make more money.

You finally got something right. there is no way TT drivers can adjust their speed to avoid hitting deer. the DOT cares more about road kills than the insurance companies. The DOT has to maintain endless miles of fencing and they have to cut the vegetation along the shoulders of the highways to reduce the number of collisions with deer.

bow, by having all those trucks so close together is what causes most of it on backhighways.

usually a single truck is no problem but put 4 together at high speed, deerwill get hit by second or 3rd truck.

we see it a lot.

roughly 50 tons
i have hit 2 deer in about last 5 years but i am out there before sunrise and after

I agree. I slow down every time I see a deer anywhere close to the road , but I still hit 3 deer in the last 50 years of driving and I put on a lot of miles working for the state of Pa. . Many roadkills are simply beyond the control of the drivers especially at night when vision is limited.

We all have something in common if we look hard enough. Truckers put their life on the line every time they climb in that cab, just like police, fireman or EMR personnel. Their job just isn't quite as glamorous as the others, but we can't live without them!
