Only the strong survive and pass their genes on. When they compete for food, the weak will die and the strong survives. Well they are eliminating this factor by killing off so many deer that they don't have to compete for food. Now the weak will survive and pass their genes on also. This here will create a better chance for these deerto catch diseases. I believe they are now doing more damage control than QMC. Just because the deer heards are in so called healthy numbers does not mean the animals are the fiittest that can be in the herds. They have no idea what they are doing. They are doing more harm to our deer heards than they thought about. Out west the deer don't have to worry about snow storms as much as they do here. Let's say we get hit by a good storm here and the deer can't move to feed for a week. The genes of the weak deer that was passed along will mostly take them deers lives. Mother nature will take care of them and has allways got rid of the weak and the strong survive. It's not so much like that any more. We eliminated the need for them to compete and survive. They had to know about this or thought about this before they got carried away. Sometimes when you think you are helping something you are really do more harm in the long run.

The plan was a flippin disaster. Any manager that would have done this at a company would have been fired and they would have fixed the plan.

What management team would be rewarded with a pay increase for reducing production by 40%? would those that support the deer management plan be happy if the PGC reduced the bear, elk and turkey populations by 40%?

I am very concerned about who is on the board and what are their goals.

We know who is on the board and we know they are representing the interests of the timber industry, not the hunters. Those that support the PGC plan are cutting their own throats ,but don't realize it.

I think some of you naysayers need to take a hard look...better yet, a knowledgeable look at the understory in 2G. It's virtually nonexistant in most places. You can see 200 yds. or more through the woods in a lot of the areas. Now just what do you think the deer are feeding on? Until the timber gets cut and the understory is allowed to regenerate, it's just pretty simple.... there is simply not enough forage to sustain a larger deer herd.

In 2003 the understory in 2G was sufficient to support a herd that produced a harvest of over 30,000 deer. Just two years later it only supported a harvest of only 11,200 deer ,simply because of the over harvest in 2003. The open understory is what one would expect to find in healthy stands of pole and saw timber where intense shading prevents the development of seedlings and saplings.

ORIGINAL: the outsider

I'm watching the executive director of the PGC review the PGC's annual report to the House Game & Fisheries Committee (on tv). Seems like now they want to increase the herd in northcentral PA. And try some new studies. Sounded like they went from reduce the herdto stabilize the herdto increase the herd.
WMU2G the pgc has got a lot of pressure from the state reps for overharvest of deer.

so, they give in a little and now the state reps WILL approve raise in fees etc so the pgc can raise their wages.

i hope everyone can see what is happening.

it has NOTHING to do with studies etc.

i like the first week to be no doe hunting but i feel reason is not what they are saying, its to GET STATE REPS ON THEIR SIDE FOR MORE MONEY.

as for habitat ,DCNR does not want deer, they hate them.
DCNR is taking over your sportsmens clubs too, yes, beware they are.
they are not dumb, only one they have not corrupted,so far is the USP.

get used to hunting not being the priority in future, its going to be HIKING TRAILS, CANOEING,BIRD WATCHING,ELK VIEWING..

when you go to your sportsmens club now,its half disguisedPETA people and 1/4 hikers/canoers etc/1/4 hunters.
hunting we are losing, for sure and its the lack of interest in hunting do to no small game/big game that will be reason..

they know this, that is why they are spending millions of your taxes on getting OTHER GROUPS interested in woods and hunting is not being supported.

look around lately at people standing in your sportsmens club,THEY ARE NOT HUNTERS,thats a fact.

You all have to remember also that down in the southwest area of the state, they were hit hard by EHD. The locals where I hunt in Greene County said it hurt the herd by about half. I used to see over 20 deer down there by noon, but this year along with the rain, I only saw three. Last archery season, I saw 10 bucks that were legal and one that I would have shot if he was in range. I saw 85-90% of all the deer during archery season. I am still seeing a good number of deer out there.

In the Norther Berks county/Schuylkll area on public land they are almost completely gone. Really!!!!!!! Just a few left. Going out this Saturday and I will put in another 5-10 miles of scouting to try and find an area that has leftover deer sign from the winter. So far this winter I have seen almost no deer sign in 4c and I would bet I have about 60-70 miles of trail walking to show for it.

This can't be a plan to improve the herd and their interaction with the citizens of our state.

5 years ago on every trip through the woods after deer season I would see actual deer.
