I pretty much thought the same way you do until I saw the summit video. Believe me it is worth seeing just to open your mind about the inherent dangers of a waist belt. It doesn't matter how high you are. If you did fall with the right conditions you could have a difficult time with the waist belt.

i dont use my waist belt until i get set in tree.
i always use it as you can lean out from tree more..
i dont use harness, i think its to much to have on,waist belt in my opinion is all you need..
i see hunters with nothing on it their stands,they are taking big risk..
i pull my waist belt tight against tree when sitting and i take nap sometimes,then after waking up, i loosen it up so i can move around..
never fell out and slept many times..
goint to 30 ft is crazy..
i hunt no higher than 15 ft and most times, around 12 ft..
why hunters would get that high is beyond me.
i killed my buck this year on ladder stand at 12 ft,he walked 10 yds from me and that stand was put up 3 days before regular gun season..
he did not smell me or notice stand,so why get that high in air..........

no way i am going to fall over side as i have it tightened just right..
i have other one ,body harness but i dont use it......
i saw guy go up tree with ice on it,i warned him ,DONT DO IT..
well he got half way up,about 12 ft and it slipped, down he came to ground..
busted is gun stock in half and bro his leopold scope..
only bruised..
those white oak trees are slippery if wet or ice is on them..
this is why i use a ladder stand now,easy to get in/out,no noise going up tree in dark,not necessary to carry my stand in/out..
only problem is, everyone knows where you are hunting..
they follow me in woods,i had last year 2 hunters in stands ,1, 50 ft from me and other 100 yds..
i see MORE injurys coming from CLIMBING STANDS in future.
going up a wet/frozen tree is awful risk..
stay with LOCK-ON,LADDER STANDS unless you are 18 years old, heck, i used to jump out of my wooden stands to ground 12 ft up at that age,i even tried to ride a buck from tree,but thats another STORY..

i hung from a apple tree limb while a 8 point walked under,let go,tried to ride the buck....
i did not land on my head but after landing on his back, over his horns i went and him on top of me.........
i dont think dad was to happy i did that..
sad, kids todaydont have memories like we didin woods....
we were gone all day doing things,trapping/hunting/fishing.shooting at stumps with bow/gun/catching rattlesnakes/tying rope on your ankle crawling into caves after fox/sleeping in trees all night,that was a lot of fun.........

I'll gladly fall 12 feer over 30 feet !! ANYDAY of the week, I've killed railroad cars full of deer in 40+ hunting seasons, most of which were from the ground, and some from a tree..and never, ever would I consider going 30 feet up in a tree for any deer....

were do yall hunt?
private land or public land?
we bow hunt on public land and it gets pounded by hunters day in and day out ,
i swear to you i have watched deer walk with head up from hundreds of yards away checking trees, and have seen them stand on edge of field and stair at an empty lock on for 10 minutes before the decided to trot past it ,
in these areas i found that a well hidden ground blind is much easier and safer then stands, the deer are skidish and jumpy at any noise made from a tree,

she slowly turned around and left..
i was mad because i was up 12 ft high and she winded me.
later i found out it was my DOE URINE scent canisterthat did it..
for some reason, doe,s dont like smell of another doe in heat, maybe they feel it means a rutting buck will be around..
i am not saying tonot get higher ,yes, if air is right, deer will smell you but think for minute,does 8 more ft really mean your scent will stay higher above deer?
no, thats why your stand has to be in right place at right time of day...
somedays the air will blow your scent down no matter how high you are...

Argueing about how high is too high makes no sense. I had a friend almost die from a fall of no more than 8 feet. The point of the thread was WEAR A HARNESS.
I killed my oldest, biggest buck from 13 feet. SO WHAT! It was a high enough place to hang that particular stand. I personally hate heights and I have to re-acclimate myself to treestands every season but I love hunting enough to force myself deal with it. I've also been as high as 40 feet when it made sense to do so but I always wear a full harness. Sometimes it's necessary to get higher for a variety of reasons. I have a great spot on a steep sidehill. At 25 feet, I'm at eye level with one of the uphill better trails. Hunting at 12-15 feet there would be just plain stupid. Almost as stupid as not wearing a full harness.
