lemond, Patterns change day to day due to the unstable weather fronts we're getting hammered with. They move daily...just not always before dark! I don't think deer here really yard up...more like they all converge on food sources and when you see one, you usually see a bunch! They are grouped up more than in years past and the bucks are traveling together. Rut's over...tried grunting at a big buck a week ago and he freaked out!

Look for standing beans if you can find some. Midday movement is good on cold days in the oak stands. Corn fields with heavy chick weed growth is getting hammered as well!

I will say I've been seeing some real monsters lately!!! Need the wind to get back due North and so I can move in a little closer!

Good luck!

Lemond, yeah, still hunting the oaks some. I hunted Friday night in an oak stand and had two bucks come in just before dark. Ended poorly though...spent Sat morning following a light blood trail to avail. Hit buck in knucle joint (elbow just below the heart). Only got three inches of penetration and the broadhead completly caved over. Very dissappointing! Jumped buck out of bed Sat am. I think he'll make it through ok. I went in the afternoon and sat on a field edge to collect my thoughts..saw 30 deer coming to some standing beans. Good luck!

Deer dont yard up in this part of the country just seem to concentrate on food sources. I had bucks chasing young does around yesterday and I saw several scrapes some of the yearlings are comming in to heat. I had 3 bucks together one being a real nice shooter following one doe and running her around. Where I am hunting there are plenty of white oak acorns left on the ground and they are feeding heavily on them. Good luck

Sorry lemond, didn't get back sooner (still bumming about the lost buck). I can't hunt all day this time of year...my attention span is spent from the previous 4 months. I like the afternoon hunts the best. Set up as near to bedding as possible. I think you'll have a tough go on public ground after all the commotion but you have my admiration for giving it a go!! Try hitting some of those out of the way areas...thick crap, marsh islands, swamps (your favorite!!!!). The cold weather should force the deer to move a little earlier than usual! Good luck!!!

yeah, u r probably right about that, but i have seen a few huge bucks in the area that i am hunting, but there seems to be less movement during the time that u r talking about. i will get back in remote areas and give them a try. i may hunt an area that is way OFF the tract here. it's a long walk. the only problem is the drag out how big was the buck the u knuckled??? i have never had that happen, but could easily see it happening. hey, everyone loves a heart shot
