Default Never Knew NY had Moose

I saw on a New York website that they offered advise of what to do if you came across a Moose or how to avoid hitting one. Anyone else ever know this?

Yep. they have them mostly in a the adirondacks. you can't hunt them b/c there's not too many of them. i believe there was one recently that made it all the way down to dutchess county, which is pretty far south. i heard they thought it came from CT. Also in Watertown NY there was one running around but i think it died.

I know for a fact that there are a couple of them running around near cranberry lake, new york. My brother and a friend helped the game wardens dart one and place a tracking collar on it. in fact, it was named laroche # after the friend. have it on video and still pictures. that was a couple of years ago, not sure if it is still in the area or not now.

I sold my sleds but on my trips to speculator and indian lake the townships recently put the moose crossing signs back up on most major roads. I also seen moose tracks in the snow along the trails. I live near Kingston NY where a calf was hit and killed along the NY thruway, most likely wandered from the catskills. They are around but not too many yet.

Moose populations are expanding everywhere. NY and MA especially. There are already allot of moose in Maine, NH and VT. I see more moose in NE VT than deer...

Here in Maine the moose population is expected to stay the same as it currently is. This believed to be because of the deer ticks. The deer ticks cause a brain worm that kills moose, and with our winters getting warmer the ticks do not die off as they normally would of. So no more increase is expected here.

There was one killed and left (except for its head) late last year in Putnam county, NY. There was another one in Putnam county last year that had to be put down because of brain worm Phil mentioned
'About the moose's brain worm
Deer carry the worm, a.k.a. meningeal worm, but aren't usually affected by the parasite. When it's ingested by a different animal - moose, elk, goats, sheep, llamas and alpacas - the parasite moves into the brain or spinal cord, causing neurological problems, and can be fatal.
Symptoms depend on the number of worm larvae present in the nervous system and the location, but can include weakness, paralysis, a head tilt, circling or inability to eat. The only way to confirm infection is to find the parasite in the nervous system, which requires a necropsy examination.
Livestock can be treated with drugs when an infection is suspected based on symptoms.
Source: Maryland Cooperative Extension'

Our DEP here in Ct estimates around a resident population of around 100 (some of which may be wandering into NY)

I heard the DEC is stocking them to be sure the mountain lions have enough to eat.
