Hey guys new to the site....I'm surprised to see a bunch of locals on this forum. Well anyway, thought I'd let you know that a huge black bear was seen near the shooting range at sleepy creek. Just watchin out for fellow hunters.

PS Ive read alot of comments about the Sleepy Creek hunting area and there arent as many hunters on this WMA like there used to be. The large ridge is right above my land and before morning what used to look like a interstate of flash lights has dwindled to one or 2 and has actually hurt my hunting because there is no one to push any deer down anymore.
If your talking about the ridge I think you are, you arent seeing many people anymore because the manager keeps the gates closed and has the roads blocked off. Too many people mud bogging and racing 4 wheelers.

Yes I have property out Posey Hollow Rd. The amount of tresspassers and other hunters Ive seen have dropped to almost none, although the amount of deer I've seen during rifle season is about the same. From the info Ive recieved Im going down to the Otter Creek and Dolly Sods WMa's and scouting a place to hunt and camp. If anyone has been to either one and can give any advice of an area to try please let me know. thx

...good to see some Esatern panhandlers here... as for SCPH.. fewer hunters there last yr tahn previous yrs... my Pal lives @ the entrance rd, so he sees who & how many.. I spring hunted there this yr, and found lotsa scrapes from last yr, should be equally good this year...good mast crop... as for those counties further south, like Pocahontas/Greenbriar/Pendleton(Potomac Highlands area).. you'll find elbow room galore... lotsa ground... few deer... rough terrain... but the big boys are there, and if you hunt far enough back, you'll have as good a chance as any big woods area of the state...but be VERY prepared to come home empty... and dress REALLLLLLL warm

I just traveled up to the Sleepy Creek area this past weekend to look around some since I am somewhat new to the area. I noticed that there was quite a bit of mast. There are acorns everywhere but not too much in terms of deer sign. My wifes grandfather tried to show me around a little bitbut we didn't get very far. I think over the next couple weeks I will travel there and sit for a little while and see what happens. If any of you guys that have experience with that area and have any any suggestions I would appreciate it. I was looking around at the opposite end from the lake I belive. I also have permission to hunt nearly 4000 acres over near Moorefied and Baker so I may get up there a few times. Good Luck guys.

If you guys can get a WV Delhorme(I think that how you spell it) map it has the logging roads up on Sleepy Creek and other WMA's. I can email you the map with just the SLeepy Creek area on it if anyone wants it. Its a large file so if you have dial up it may take a while. Just email or PM me and I can also help with where to try at Sleepy Creek.
Rem1100 what areas have you hunted before. Im still looking forsome good leads on where to hunt in any of the certain area's.

Bro..I've hunted ALOT of the Mon.Nat. Forest..as well as the GW Nat Forest. As for Dolly Sods... rugged and windy...few animals...big bucks when found. HARD HUNTING. Spruce Knob..better hunting...less rugged(for most part).. ave # of game for big woods...lotsa fire trails to walk(or get run over by outlaw 4 wheelers)...Cranberry Glades area... very rugged...ave # animals... have hunted around the New River Gorge also... good hunting/more hunters. On the average, you'll not run into many hunters deeper into the woods. The deer normally hang around the farm edges(private) but will move higher when season pushes them there.. I've had success @ most of those places, but it wasn't a picnic gettin' 'em out. You ever drag a deer for 3 miles? you will there.....if Lady Luck comes callin'..... also don't get discouraged too quick..there's alot fo ground you'll have to cover...
PS.. it should be legal to open fire on 4wheelers illegally operating w/i the Nat Forest borders....that's my opinion... they're no better than poachers, to me. and you WILL hear/see 'em....
