If you are strictly looking for a deer rifle I would go with a 30-30. Inexpensive, reliable, and deadly accurate. The perfect deer rifle for the northeast. If you looking for a deer/bear combo their are better options.

Heavy magnum, big clip or magazine, and semi auto. Need to be sure we are "humanely" controling the population as senator Volker stated was the purpose of the bill.

Some people will completely disagree, but I would say a Marlin 336 in 30-30. I have shot that, a .308, 300 winchester magnum, and 12 gauge, and I like the 30-30 the best. Its inexpensive, light, not bulky, very reliable, and plenty of knockdown power for deer. I have shot 2 bucks(keep in mind ive only been able to hunt for 3 seasons), andI dropped both of them in their tracks with my marlin 336 at 30 and 70 yards, and my father dropped one in its tracks at 225 yards with the 30-30. Some people say its useless after 100 or 150 yards max, but i disagree only because ive seen it take deer at alot further distances with it.

I have a Savage Model 10 in .243 Win that I'll be using this year - I have used it in PA for the last 2 years and I limit my shots to inside 200 yrds in fields and I really try to not shot any further that 100 yrds if possible - I will still be using my Rem 870 12 gauge with open sites in alot of places that I hunt - it's just too thick to really get a shot over 30 yrds and I have had no trouble filling tags over the last 10 years so I figure why change if what i am doing is working. The only think that I like about allowing rifles in NY is that a couple of stands I have over look a couple of big alfalpha fields and now I can take a longer shot instead of repositioning my stand if the deer start comming in from a different part of the woodline which happens more offten than not -

308 or 7MM-08 both are plenty powerful for black bear and both shoot flat out to 250 yards without compesating for bullet drop. Guns are often lighter than the 06 length actions also.
PS: The 308 case very popular in long range target shooting and is known for its accuracy.
