RE: wolf hunting in wisconsin
It will take a crap load of livestock to be killed before a season is opened, just ask people in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming.. Eventually they will have to open a short season on them in some areas but you are right, it will not be well received by the general public until they start showing up outside of schools "hunting" children or taking peoples dogs out of their backyards... It seems that this is the only reason that you can take Mountain lions in some areas without too much uproar (And I am sure there are some areas where there is a lot of complaints about this too).

This has been a big controversy in Wisconsin. Most people scoff at the "experts" and their population estimates. And when it looked as if the wolves would be declassified as endangered and moved into the threatened category which would allow a hunting season, an Oregon federal judge denied the action and kept them as endangered. No hunting season in the foreseeable future.
I'm not sure where you get your information, 270deer, but there are plenty of wolves in WI and MN. Simply because these states have a "crap load" of deer, doesn't mean wolves don't take their share. Hunting publications constantly post photos of wolf kills and researchers claim hundreds of deer are killed each year. That's not a huge number considering our deer population, but don't think it's not a problem in the northwoods. And if you truly believe a wolf sighting is "very very rare", you don't get out often. It's easy to find tracks and it's no problem seeing several each fall.

Maybe you guys should be more worried about the number of coyotes. Coyotes take far more deer in Wisconsin and Minnesota per year than do wolves. And as for livestock, the number taken by wolves is very low. In 2004 only 38 farm animals were taken by wolves. In these instances, the DNR has programs of relocating problem wolves
Wolves in both states are tracked extensivly by the DNR. The wolf population in Wisconsin was estimated at 354 in 2003. Right now it is somwhere between 300 and 500 animals. Coyote populations are estimated to be between 17,000-20,000 in wisconsin.
I think you guys are just scared of the big bad wolves. []
