I was lucky enough to take two bucks off Illinois public land this season. One with my bow October 3rd, then the second with my muzzleloader November 17th. I was fortunate to draw a really good gun permit in the lottery.

Had to get pretty lucky to draw this permit in the 1st resident lottery. Was a good hunt. Took him on the 2nd morning 11 AM. I think the 1st gun season caught more of the prime rut than usual with this year's dates. I was surprised nobody was hunting opening morning. Nobody in the parking area. Five vehicles between two lots on the 2nd day, Saturday. I really enjoy the challenge of hunting public land. Woul dhave been even better to take this buck with my bow, as he gave me an easy 25 yard broadside shot. He was tending a hot doe, with no other buck hanging around.
