Morning hunt:
I got up at 4:15 am. I was at the hunting area by 5:15am. Seriously!
(I thought sunrise was at 6am.. oops. [:-]) So, Igot there nice and early.
Was supposed to meet Kendall back at the truck at 10:30. Saw three bucks walk single file along the top of the next ridge over at 10:15am. Two dinks and one half-decent buck. So, I'm in the tree, text messaging Kendall to let him know I wasn't going to be on time. Anyhow, the deer never came closer than 80-100 yards.
It was big time windy. Several squirrels kept me company.
Evening hunt:
Got to the hunting area a little before 4pm. Me and a zillion other hunters. Well, it seemed like it anyhow. Met a guy in the parking lot who has a stand a couple hundred yards down from mine. We wished each other luck and hiked out there. The squirrels were still keeping busy. Saw a doe at about 6:30pm. She was about 40 yards from me and headed towards the other guy (headed southeast). I thought I could hear more deer but it's so thick I couldn't see any. Watched a raccoon. Then at about ten to seven, I hear all sorts of crashing off to my left. Several deer were running back from the area ofother guy's stand. Then I see two coyotes follow where the deer went.
Just before dark I climb back down. The guy who hunts to the southeastof me had shot a doe. That explains the deer running back towards me. I wish him luck in recovering the deer (he hadn't looked for it yet). I tried to warn him about the coyotes, but he didn't seem concerned.
According to the sign in sheets there were about 50-60 hunters out there today.

Glad to hear you are seeing deer, even if you're seeing more hunters too.
Good idea getting in very early Christine, even if it was an oops. The opening week is always very crowded for me.
Good luck out there.
Climb safe.

RE: Anybody get out for Opening day ??
I got out for opening day. My job got set back, so Igot out about 11:30. Me and Dina found this spot in the spring and Mark and I went there about 3-4 weeks ago to cut shooting lanes so it would settle down real nice by now. I was in my stand 1 hour and 50 minutes when another hunter walks by, right down the main trail I was set up on, then walks up the trail towards the area I expected the deer to come from later on. Ruined the whole area. I moved to another new spot I've been wanting to try for a couple years now, but it's still to thick. I didn't see anything four-legged. Maybe better luck next time out.
The thing that sucked the most was that there were only 6 hunters hunting the whole park all day, and I was about as far as I could get away from the parking lot, and I still get someone walking in my area. Hunting public-land sucks so bad sometimes.

Steve, you should have stayed out. There's a good chance the deer would still come down the trail. I've seen deer walk down trails people have been on just moments earlier. I've also seen them stand and watch people walking in/out and then once the person is gone, they go about their business.

Yea, I went out opening morning. It was a very short hunt though....I got into my treestand around 6:15; at 7:15 I had shot my first doe, at 7:20 I shot my second doe (a little dink that went about 60lbs at best). All in all I was pretty satisfied with the outcome.
I went back out for the afternoon hunt. About 6:30 I had 6 does working their way towards me and (of course) I did not wait patiently enough. I only let the big one get about 30 yards from me before I took the shot. Well that infamous limb that I did not see was about 5 yards before her. The arrow went North and the doe went South (pretty fast at that )
I am flying to Houston this weekend; however I will go back out on Tuesday next week......
Good luck to all of y'all that are going out this weekend......Looks like it may be a hot, wet one!

Congrats Ken!
A double in 5 mins, and then a 3rd shot opp later on. Nice job.
(lucky so-and-so)
It's going to be hot and dry up my way when I get out on Sun, so I'm just hoping to find some shade to sit in. Very thankful the leaves are still onthe trees orthe 86 drgrees they are calling for would be pretty rough.
