Questions about elk hunts
I'd love to go on an elk hunt out west next year. I looked around a little bit and saw most prices were about $4,000. Is that about the average price of a guided big game hunt? I'd either use a bow or muzzleloader.

RE: Questions about elk hunts
Depends on if it is a hunt where you have drawn your own tag through the states draw system or if it is a hunt that includes a landowner permit that allows a hunter to buy their license over the counter without going through the draw systems. $4,000 for a draw hunt is average at best and even that depends on size of bulls any hunt would offer a chance at. Anything under $5,000 for a hunt that includes a landowner permit if it is a legitimate quality hunt is a good buy and getting hard to find.

RE: Questions about elk hunts
I am a booking consultant here in Colorado and work with numerous outfitters statewide. The average cost for a lodge style, private property hunt is right around 4000.00, but you can get pack in wilderness hunts for an average of 3400.00. I do have some great hunts that are cheaper and some that go for alot more, but those are the averages for a quality elk hunt here in Colorado. Most tags are available over the counter, but even the tags available on private property are easy to draw, and the cost of the landowner voucher is sometimes added and sometimes not, depending on the outfitter and whether he has to pay for them or not. Alot of variables can be put together, but that is about the norm. Let me know if I can help.

RE: Questions about elk hunts
the cost you are asking, is about average, however it's what's not included you need to check on, because this does up the cost:
- license/tag - non-resident, could be upwards of $1000 even for OTC especially if its a combination hunt
- you gotta get there!
- butcher
- get the meat home
So ya, it costs $4000ish to hunt, its the other stuff you need to keep your eyes open on.

RE: Questions about elk hunts
$4,000 for a fully outfitted hunt for bull elk is a little on the low side. I would ask about the property, success rates, elk size, etc.
I am an outfitter here in Colorado and we are $4,500 for fully guided elk, but we hunt on over 15,000 acres of private land with a LOT of elk.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to drop me a line.
