RE: How do you use a compass..?
LeeinVa1 is correct; you're going to need a map and some training on how to use a map and compass if you expect to navigate to a point instead of wandering in a general direction.
You can find US Geological Service maps online here (you'll likely find the 1:25,000 scale maps to be the most helpful): http://www.topozone.com/
Akbound's suggestion to join an orienteering group is excellent -- they can teach you how to navigate using a map and compass. You might want to check out this tutorial on "How to use a compass" (an orienteering compass). Links to lessons appear at the bottom of the page. Lessons 1 and 2 are good.

Akbound also suggested getting a book. Consider FM 3-25.26 "Map Reading and Land Navigation" -- the Army has been teaching people to navigate with a map and compass for a long time (and the price is right):

(Caution, 23M download, but you can also download chapter-by-chapter.)
Chapters 9, 10, 11 and 13 are useful. GPS users see Appendix J.
From a former orienteering team member and Army helicopter pilot -- I'm a better land navigator than deer hunter, which is why I'm reading this BBS!
Hope this helps.
