Question Garmin Hunting Electronics

Are they the best?

I understand the pricey Astro tracking GPS system, depending on model, can:

1. be used as a VHF radio walkie-talkie
2. be used for navigation in the woods or field
3. track your dogs with the special radio collar

Is this correct?

Hunters to operate effectively in the field, be safe and keep their dogs safe have to:

1. navigate
2. communicate with dogs, drivers, dog handlers, partners, fellow party members, guides, etc.
3. locate game and their dogs
4. shoot hopefully only legal game and not humans or hounds
5. move unless stationed at a stand
6. be seen by others

Dog tracking devices work for training in the field as well as during the hunt.
Even if you hike and are not hunting with your dog, the tracker can prevent a lost dog.

Do you recommend it?

I have no idea about this particular model, however I have one of their top of the line, hand held GPS units that they were offering 3 years ago. It is simple to use and precise, however in thick timber often takes a while to "find itself". I suggest that you carry extra batteries just in case and never rely upon any electronics to get you out of the woods. A good compass and quality maps of the area should always be carried.

It's a miracle any of us survived before GPS became available to the individual outdoorsman!!
