How Much Scope Power ?
I just purchased a new Tikka T3 / 22-250 cal. It's a beautiful rifle. I want to put a Leupold VX-II scope on it but I am not sure whether I should mount the 4-12X40 or the 6-18X40. My max shooting will probably be 250 yds. I am concerned that the 6-18 will be very unsteady. Also is a dot reticle any advantage over a duplex? Any advice ?
Thanks

The thing is with the 6-18, you can always leave it in a lower power, you can always go down from 18, you can't go up from 14 not that you'd necessarily need it. You probably wounldn't use below 6 for varminting. Personal preference

RE: How Much Scope Power ?
As previously mentioned , you have the option for the higher magnification if req’d with the 6-18 power. Yes the 18 power will be unsteady but more then likely you will have some sort of rest for shooting. I have a 6-20 x 40 for my target / varmint rifle and find the power works very well. I’ve never used a dot reticle so I can’t comment on it. As for the rifle, I don’t have a Tikka but have heard lots of good things about Tikka. Good luck and enjoy.
