I wonder if an old style American Indian travoise would work? For those who don't know, a travoise was used by the plains indidans for use with horses and smaller ones were used on dogs. It consists of two poles of a good length formed in a lopsided X. The shallow side of the X is attatched to the horse or dog, (or bike) with the intersection up or around the rider. With the few feet or inches of this end extending past the rider a bit. The long part of the poles extend behind the bike or horse or dog at a gentle angle so that the ends of the poles (and only the ends) drag the ground. This back part has a skin or netting spread between the poles. the load rests on this and is strapped down. I have used one of these by hand and found it to be a great way of carrying heavey loads in places where wheel won't work. The drag was much less than I expected. Just a thought

Hey,
I'm a mountain bike racer and bowhunter. I also did a lot of scouting this summer on the bike. I remember, probably ten years ago, seeing a cool handlebar mount set-up for bikes that sort of resembled the ATV handlebar mounts. Never heard anything about the product since, and I don't remember who made them. I would suggest just using a backpack, as long as you're not carrying more than 20 pounds or so, cause then it really wears your arms out holding up all that weight. Good Luck, and let me know if you find something.
