Red dot scope or powered scope?
Interested in mounting a scope on my slug gun. I am not sure if I want to mount a red dot scope on it or a powered scope on it such as a 1.5 - 5x. Do you have any experience with either and which would you recommend?

RE: Red dot scope or powered scope?
I tried a Red dot scope on my slug gun a few years
ago and hated it. I had always used open sights
with no problem, why I decided to change I'm still
trying to figure out. It may work OK for turkey
hunting, but on a slug gun I'd either go with
open sights or a low powered scope...like
a 1.75 x 4. The Red dot has no magnification..
...when I sighted in my gun that year my pattern
was more spread than it was with open sights. I
guess the fact that I missed a huge buck at 70
yards the one and only day I used the
Red dot might have something to do with my
opinion. Nevertheless, I changed guns the next
day and took it off at the end of that season.
There must be hunters who do like them since
they're still selling them, but I would never
recommend one. I do have a B&L 1.75 x 4 on my
muzzleloader that works very well...like a
'scope' is supposed to! <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Red dot scope or powered scope?
I absolutely love my ProPoint red dot scope!! I will never go back to open sights. I don't think a magnifying scope is necessary on a slug gun because your range is limited anyway and it reduces your field of view which is critical for the kind of quick shots you often get while slug gun hunting.
