Pigs Mental Time Clock
How long would you guess it takes for a pig tobecome acclimated to thetiming of a feeder? Once the pig knows when the feeder will go off, will they generally show up every day or every couple of days?

It depends on a lot more than timing. What other food sources are near by? Is there any pressure on the hogs that will keep them away? Hogs are very intelligent animals and will learn the pattern of your feeder in a hurry. HOWEVER, they will also figure out in a hurry that there is danger involved.

The feeder will be about100 yards from the san jacinto river. The area is very sandy/loamy, but the farther from the river, you go,the swampier it gets. Thereare really no predators that feed on the hogs other than a verysmall population ofcoyotes and a foxthat i see on rare occationthat might grab a youngin' given the opportunity. The landowner counted 14 hogs in the middle of the field, in the middle of the afternoon, a few days ago, so I doubt that there is too much pressure on the hogs. I know the hogs were hunted pretty hard a few years ago with dogs, but the fellow that used to hunt them with his dogs hasnt done so in prolly 3 years.

If i let the feeder go for 2 weeks without hunting it, then hunting it once every 2 weeks, would that be adequateenough to keep the pigs from being too wary of the feeder and its danger

Hunt the feeder until they feel the pressure then back off and hunt the trails leading in. Pigs will stage up like deer sometimes before rushing in to feed. You can sour some corn and bury it along the trails to help if necessary. You want them to work for the food sometimes. Will keep them around longer. Like the others said, Pigs are smart and tough.

be careful how close you shoot the hog to the feeder. If you get a lot of blood make sure to take a shovel and bury it. I have feeders the are beside my traps. I've noticed over the years that if youshoot the hog in the trap, other hogs won't come back until the blood smell is gone.
